before you consider it, understand that the seeds for peyote are illegal as well in the US

You can graft them just a few days after they germinate, onto pereskiopsis for example. Letting them grow a few weeks first is probably better.
Peresk is also a great grafting stock for pachanois and other cacti that you might want to grow...

It's easy and you can have a self-sustaining garden within 5 years!
You can graft a 2-3 week old seedling onto a pereskiopsis plant and after 2-3 months you already have a peyote of 1 inch diameter. Check out the bottom of the page in this link ,it will make things more clear.

I would imagine with a few pereskiopsis you could have a nice collecion in much less then 5 years. First get some pedro cuttings and torch seed or cuttings if you can find any. Then get ~20 peyotes and slowly graft them as you build up your pereskiopsis stock. 6 months from starting you should have 20-60 graftable buttons to go onto pedros for the final graft. Add another year and you should be smooth sailing.

If i were you start hunting down a pereskiopsis source first and propigate them before starting any seeds unless you can get a good 6-10 cuttings.

Another cactus that is fast and easy to graft to is Opuntia Compressa.

I started this spring with one OC and now have about a dozen with 5 others that now grafted with 2 month old scions.

OC will give you slower growth then Periskiopsis, but it is a permanant graft and the cactus will flower quicker. The mature cacus from this graft are also very normal looking unlike Periskiopsis.

Do a Google search on grafting to Opuntia and you'll see.

Hope this also helps.
