Any poisonos lookalikes to "bay boletes" (Boletus badius) ?
    #3167823 - 09/22/04 11:11 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Im not nececarally asking for an ID but it would be nice, ive found some boletes with im 99% sure are Boletus badius; growing in a group in a park on a somewhat steep hill (in vancouver. British Columbia, Canada), on the edge of some grass, near a coniferous tree. It has yellow spongy, adnate gills which bruise Inky blue. The cap is Brown, slightly shaggy, and convex, The meat is white on the inside, and the stem Stains steel blue when cut or broken. also, the stem and cap are "one piece." They smell very tasty!

sorry, no picture....

my question is, is this a bay bolete? and are there any mushrooms that are poisonous and look like them?

We need to know about the surface of the stem. Does it have a netlike pattern of tiny ridges on it? Look at the top of the stem near the tubes. You may have to get the light right to see them or use a magnifier.

When you bruise the tubes, how long does it take for them to change color?

Happy mushrooming!

the stem blued very rapidly after i broke it.

the stem is firm and fiberous, not very flexible, it also tapers a little towards the base and has a but of a bulb at the base. it expands alot past the spongy gills creating the cap.

when i look very closely, with bright light near the cap (the rest of the stem had been handlesd alot) it looks like there is some sort of "texture" like really tiny darker colored dots that are easier to see at a certain angle. The tiny dot texture is protruding from the surface of the stem.

the spongy part blued very rapidly after handling too

also, the biggest caps i found are about 3 - 4 inches in diameter
