When to harvest?

Well my cakes are almost done but when is the best time to pick? People say to pick just before the veil breaks but should you wait till they bulk up?
Heres an example of what I picked last night that was ~30 grams:

Should I wait till they reach this state for the added weight?:

I also wait until caps are open and find I get slightly more weight out of them.

Does waiting effect potency any, noticeably anyway?

Nope, no noticable difference at all.

Other than the fact that after a mushroom breaks its veil it focuses no longer on psycotropic production but production of spores. So harvesting before the veil breaks will yield a more potent mushroom for the weight, while waiting for the cap to enlarge will yield a larger but less potent mushroom.
I believe this is generally accepted, correct me if I'm wrong.

There is no noticable difference IME or anyone else that I know and they do not lose potency as they mature. This harvesting before caps open has always been a storage and transporting issue as well as keeping heavy spore loads off the casing IMO. I'd like to meet the guy that says he can tell the difference because that would be a very foolish man indeed! I don't see to many of them.

It is actually true in theory...once the veil breaks the shrooms no longer produce more psychoactives, so you do actually get larger shrooms with the same amount of psilocin as those that have their veils still attached/just broke. I do agree though, it is hard to tell, despite the theory. As they mature more fully though, the taste does change, something to consider.

question for SCAT:
What did you grow with? (i.e. strain, colonized substrate, casing substrate - ?)

Taste changes for the better? Im trying to find a good reason to wait for big fatties but if actives production stops at the veil break I dont really see a reason to wait for bigger bulk just because of the nausea factor.

The generally accepted 'right' time is just after the veil breaks, unless you want to take spore prints before doing further 'research' with them. I would imagine the flavor gets a bit worse after there are developed spores, but I really don't have a clue so don't take that as a fact. For all I know the spores could be tasteless, I've never tasted spores by themselves (since, that's a waste of spores).

The top was Brazil, bottom two were Z. I use rye berries following Magash's Rye Tek to a T. Look for the post entitled "Rye", its gotta be on the first few pages. I dont agree with them stopping the active production and have found no research to prove it. If you would offer any sort of citations to where you got that knowledge I'll consider changing my standpoint however I dont think this is the case. Either way, I let them get fully fully mature and no one complains about potency, these are in fact some of the most potent that people have had..

I think it's funny that some people think they stop producing actives because of spore production which BTW is only a window of a couple of days. The mushroom for those who do not know is the mycelium and the fruit you see is just that a fruit. As soon as the pin develops the mushrooms only motivation is reproduction. I have never met anyone who could actually tell a difference in potency, it doesn't make any sense that it would lose any potency because it's continuing it's life cycle. It sounds to me scatmanrav that our views are similar
