Firefox drawing fans away from Microsoft IE

Published: September 15, 2004, 2:59 PM PDT
By Robert Lemos
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

"update: Open-source browsers Mozilla and Firefox have won over a significant number of defectors from Microsoft's Internet Explorer in the past nine months, Web site metrics suggest.

The gains for Firefox, which was released in a version 1.0 preview on Tuesday, and for Mozilla are most noticeable at Web sites popular by geek-chic early adopters. For example, W3Schools.com, a Web development tutorial site found that Mozilla-based browsers were used by 18 percent of its visitors in September, up from 8 percent in January. Internet Explorer use dropped to 75 percent from 84 percent in the same period."

Forgive the cut and paste from another thread, but....

I've been playing with the 1.0 and the previous (.092?) for a while now, well just got 1.0 today... and while the popup blocker works fine there is a few bugs. Minor ones.

Using the reply box here.....
1. If there is existing text, even if the cursor is clearly flashing before the text, when I click "quote" the brackets always appear after the pre-existing text.
2. With IE I could right click between the quote brackets and then paste, if I do so with Firefox the text appears after the brackets. I have to left click between the brackets and then right click to paste.

Small things? Yes. They happen in both versions of Firefox though.

Opera is lame...Firefox is nice but still kinda buggy and is missing a lot of the functionality that IE has. Nutscrape is slow moving bloatware. I think all browsers pretty much suck, I should just learn how to make my own.

what can you possibly hold against opera?

i can't think of one single thing that i don't like about it.

note, i've been using it since ver 1.0 when it fit on a floppy.

i agree that netscape is bloated but i can't say that IE has some kinda special functionality. what, Active(lyfuckmeover)X?

Standards compliance and cross-platform support and the 2 things i primarily look for in a browser.

keep in mind that tabs, gestures, etc. were pioneered by the Opera developement team.

I've been using Firefox for about 2 weeks now... I love it!

I think it works/loads much better than  IE.

Go Firefox

opera fucking rules.
although I prefer firefox...

as far as I'm concerned, opera & firefox are the only two browsers that are important...with mozilla suite ranking in a distant third.

I think the new RSS integration is great, it's nice to have all of the headlines load up as bookmarks.

Some of my favourite extensions:

Tabbrowser extension
Chatzilla (IRC client)
Weatherfox (Forecasts in the status bar)
FoxyTunes (control your mp3 player from the status bar)

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I just downloaded Firefox, and I must say I'm impressed. I love the window tabs.

I used opera when I first got fed up with IE. I then switched to firefox after hearing about it so much.

The first thing I didn't really enjoy about firefox was how wide the tabs are, whereas the opera tabs are nice and skinny. But I don't use crappy 800x600 resolution anymore. I use 1600x1200 and I don't have that many tabs open anyways.

Firefox owns all!!

Opera rocks too!!
