ID wanted - just out of curiosity

I made this post in OTD, but you guys are the real pros.

Care to take a stab at what this is?

I would have guessed Amanita muscaria, but I can?t find any resources saying they exist in these parts.

It is possibly an Amanita, but to ID to species you'll need more specimens of varying maturity.

The bases of the stems are also important in the id of aminitas.

They are definitely Amantias, but we can't tell which species from those photos. We need to see the entire mushroom dug up, and we especially need to see the base of the stem. On most species of Amanita there is a cup-like structure around the base of the stem called a volva. Identification of Amanitas uses the appearance of the volva as one of the most important features. Since these resemble Amanita muscaria, we need to see the top of the volva - for that species it usually breaks up into parallel rings on the stem.

Happy mushrooming!

okay, tell me how to remove them so I don't ruin the features you seek and I'll get the pics

I mean should I dig a few inches around em or can I just pull and twist?

if i were you i would wait till it matures and leave it.. id rather let it mature and drop its spores and actually have something.. than dig up immature specimens and possibly destroy it .especially since most people wont eat amanitas

Oh I'll let them grow up

but I'd at least like to have a good ID on what I have in my yard - I don't want to leave a possible killer for my dog to eat or anything like that

It's not likely for your
dog or any animal for that
matter to die from eating that
mushroom....maybe get a little sick
that's all... dog's don't generally pay
attention to mushrooms in my experience..
And they tend not to graze... Nofindum...

Use a knife, dig into the ground next to it, and lever the mushroom up out of the ground. After the first one you will get a good idea of how far down these particular ones go, so the others will be easier.

Happy mushrooming!

Squirrels and deer and slugs and snails love to trip on Amanita muscaria. We see it here in Seattle in parks all of the time. Amanitas grow right in the city in public places and at times one can observe squirrels munching on them or you can see niblets in the mushroom caps from where they munched on them. We have also seen them stoned and playful while under the influence of the Amanita muscaria in public parks in Seattle.

They love them.

In Siberia, deer can smell a man's urine while pissing ffrom someone who ate amanita muscatria and have been known to smell them from a quarter mile away, running and often attacking a human to get to the amanita urine on the ground. IT is one of their favorite foods. And if you have seen the movie the Bear, the bear eats amanita and their is a stupid dream sequence of the bears mushroom dreams while the bear is under their influence.

mj

However, dogs find most shrooms not worthy of even a scenting of them and generally will not eat a wild mushroom. Nor will a cat. Sometimes people make cruel posts here about how they get their pets high, but the strange stories are "my cat ate my shrooms" or "my dog ate my shrooms." I would personally have to see that to believe that.

mj

anyway, do not worry about that. One other problem here in Seattle is that many times I have come across beautiful Amanita muscaria families where some straight or stupid [person has walked by them and kicked them to pieces just to be helpful in hoping no one might eat them because they think they are a poisonous shroom.

mj

Here is a bunch of young baby Amanita muscaria mushrooms froma large park in Seattle.

I see slugs eating Amanitas all the time in Seattle city parks....

But I?ve never seen a squirrel running around tripping on them.

This one is by far the smallest but its the only mature one so far

and proof that deer do in fact love these

this stem was about as big around as my fist
