SRA outdoors on straw
    #3165041 - 09/22/04 03:45 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

last winter I got a SRA culture of armedia (thanks again  and I made some agar plates of the mycelium but it grew a bit slow.

Then I inoculated some WBS and sawdust in order to make spawn - took quite some time till the spawn was ready.

After that I boiled some chopped up wood cuttings from apple trees and willow and inoculated them with the SRA spawn.
The strange thing was that the mycelium grew very fast this time !
It seems that the SRA does not like total sterility at all.

In the beginning of juli I soaked a bale of straw in hot water in my bathing tube  over night and put it in the garden under a small tree afterwards.
Then I inoculated the wet bale with the wood cuttings and also this time the mycelium colonized the straw - which was not sterile at all - whithin a week.

Here you can see the bale under the tree:

And here you can see the mycelium inside the bale after about a week:

Now, after about two months the first mushrooms came out.
I did not think that they would grow so fast and expected the firts harvest in springtime.

The first "pin":

This one has it's difficulties getting trough the surface:

Finally:

After the harvest - the caps and are really huge - they cover a DINA4 paper easily:

the size matters a lot here. If a SRA fruitbodies weights a kilo each, the number of fruitbodies can be relatively low but the yield is still the same..(averaging 3-4 kg per bale or 10% of the substrate weight (wet) says my Swedish cultivation book)

for Raga for all his cultivation endeavours!

thanks guys:

I have read about the method with the whole bale of straw in an old cultivation book.
This method is very easy if you have a big enough container for pasteurization and it seems to fruit very fast.

Edit: Print already gone !
