Rye seems impossible to find in my area, so I was wondering what would be the general consesus on the next best thing?

Another vote for popcorn!
For me it has been better than rye, and they are plenty potent! Grows fast too. I have tried EQ, Orissa and Huautla so i guess it's good for any kind of cube.

WBS and straw are both good. Chances are you can still get rye in your town if you talk to the right people. Just because a store does have it on the shelf does not mean they can't get it in. Just about any health food store will be able to order it in if you speak to the manager in charge of ordering and they will take a cash deposit for it if you don't like paper trails. Here we have a store called Wild Oats, they don't carry it but have no problems getting some in with their next shipment if you ask them. It may require buying something like a 25lb bag, but in time you will go through all of that and it will be cheaper in bulk. They were even nice enough to point out a small store that does carry it across town. The small mom and pop places can be your best friend. They will bend over backwards to stop you from going to walmart.

It's weird becasue i went out to farm country to the feed stores - when I asked for it, they didn't seem to understand what I was saying...They had everything else like WBS, syringes, barley, hay etc...but they thought rye was a weird question...
I think I'll try WBS - question though, can WBS with mineral oil added work?....

for rye you may need to specify that you're looking for seed for planting

WBS at just about any store you go to will work fine . Cousin IT does the old go to a feed and grain store , one that specilizes in birds , he then goes to bulk section and makes his own mix of milo/millet (red and japanese millets) , very cheap and does not have that coating most bird feed companies use for pet birdies . Good Luck

Have you actually tried this ? Cousin IT was curios about using them but was not sure if oats would stay firm after cooking them in pc \ac . He will have to add some into his mix next time he goes to bird store .

Cracked corn works good. You should be able to find a 50 pound bag for around $7.

I'm starting my first grow with whole grains and I decided to go with popcorn (mostly because I was at my local supermarket and found six pounds was like $5).
I've had no personal experience with it, but I've been researching grains for awhile as I've been interested and it seems the best route to go for me. But for you, who knows?
Good luck.

yes on many occasions... simmer it for 45 minutes, cool and test the kernels by pinching them... if they squish easily then you're ready to load your containers... they do get pretty soft but they retain loads of water and the mycelium colonizes very fast...
do not use rolled oats or steel cut oats, only whole oat groats

Do you think they would do okay just mixing some into milo\millet mix straight into jars , and then into the old pc ? And yes I hear you on the differnet types of oats , use only the "groats" (they are still in the husk ). We are trying to make food for myc , not a bowl of oatmeal
I have never pre soaked any grains and have had great luck , kinda got a perfected sytem for getting moisture content right , would have to play with it if I try the groats , but that should be simple nough to factor in ( I HOPE ). Thanx for the input on this topic .
