Mycobag question for Cervantes (or anyone)...
    #3158910 - 09/21/04 01:09 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Trying to get a response from Cervantes. I have read a lot of his posts about mycobags and he knows quite a bit about them. If anyone else could help that would be great. Anyway...

This will be my first time growing. I decided to go with mycobags. i have read some posts by Cervantes that mycobags can take a bit of "neglect". I wanted to just innoculate my bag and put it in a rubber or plastic trash can (to keep it better out of sight and away from pets). I would place it in a room that gets daylight through blinds. I would like to keep the bag at a constant 76-78 room temperature for colonazation and fruiting. The bag would be exposed to the same light and temperatures from the beggining. Invitro type methods such as mycobags can be exposed to light like this right? What are my chances of getting premature pins?

Being my first time, I was wondering if I could just toss the bag in the trash can, and not worry about temperature, incubation, and lighting. Just say screw it and watch the shrooms grow. I know colonazation would take longer, but how much longer? Would I still get shrooms?

I don't want to maximize my yield and I have the patience to wait longer if need be. I just want to know if I'll get shrooms this way.

the answers are : yes, it will still colonize (a bit slower) at room temps, you will still produce fruits, I sat a couple on my desk (room temp was 70F) and allowed them to fully colonize and fruit with exposure to light through the entire proscess, they pinned after the substrate was fully colonized.... you'll get good yeilds from teh bags... the entire proscess from innoculation to pinning was 49 days... you'rs may be faster since you estimate a higher temp

Just the answer I was looking for Prisoner#1. Thanks! 49 days would be fine with me. About how many days was it from pinning to harvest? I notice I spelled colonization wrong more than once.

Yeah, that is a good plan. But, use a CLEAN garbage can.

Harvest usually comes 4-5 days after initial pinning.

If you mash your bags at the proper times, they may be a bit faster... but my room temp bags were about as fast as prisoner1's.

They may pin prematurely, but by harvest time, the bag should be fully colonized.

Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions you need.

Thanks for the reply Cervantes. Been reading through the Tripper's FAQ and I find it very interesting. After my first harvest it will only be my third time tripping. Trying to educate myself.

About 2 months for harvest time does not sound bad at all. Thanks again Cervantes, I've learned a lot by reading your posts.

Incubating in total darkness may speed up your substrate run slightly also.

Yeah I was considering maybe keeping the top of the trash can covered, with a lid or a blanket or something. Then I decided I'll just leave it uncovered and see what happens. Just watch everything grow.

I do have a question though. Since I am using a trash can (I will use a new one and clean it good) light will only be coming into the bag from the top, and not from the sides. This just means the shrooms will grow upward toward the light, right? They would still get the light they need in a trash can wouldn't they?

Yup... you got it. I think you are ready to inject... if you have spores. Just make sure you inject between the plastic lining of the bag and the substrate... instead of the middle of the substrate... and you are all set.

Mycobags grow themselves. Well worth the money, if you have it.

I'd definitely throw a bag in that trash can first as a sterile liner to put your bags into. Cheap insureance  GL

No need for a liner... just make sure the bags have room to inflate... you'll be fine.

OK liners #1 keep from getting small scratches if it's a plastic trash can which over time will harbor contams (I've seen it) It also keeps you from having to clean the trash can everytime. My suggestion would be it definitely makes for a nicer job all around.
Yes just a simple plastic trash bag (they come sterile BTW).

Well, I'd never recomend using a dirty trash can in the first place... a bleached bin is a clean bin. No need to line.

I've come to love plastic if were talking tubs/bins I don't use liners either just perlite water/h2o2 and the mycobags. My first thought was one of those outdoor metal garbage cans then I thought maybe he's talkin one of those indoor plastic ones and now that my head is coming down from the clouds I'm thinkin ya I hear what your saying and I agree no liner needed just be sure your careful not to put scratches in the sides of the container if ya want to keep reusing it over and over. and of course no one was suggesting using a "dirty" trash can  :P I know airhead

Oh... and one last thing... if you use the bag, you don't need a trash can.
