Anyone familiar with Vipassana?

I am thinking of going to this 10 day silent meditation retreat. My friend turned me onto it. It sounds really amazing. In fact, I know it is.
Anyone with experience in it? http://www.dhamma.org/

Cool. My friend has been doing it for 20 years. He is one of the most soulful amazing people I have ever met. When he gets back from those retreats, you can just FEEL the energy all around him. No kidding. You look into his eyes and feel blown away.
The retreats are all over the world and are free. Good luck and tell us what you decide.

Sounds awesome. I should be going to a sesshin pretty soon (7 days of zen meditation, with talking only during interviews with your teacher and ritual chants). Retreats are the shiznit.

Cool, TinTree. Have you been before? That is something I've been wanting to do for a long time.

Nope, it'll be my first one. Finally buckling down to make a deep commitment to spiritual progress. I can't wait.

I've heard the first time is really hard and tiresome unless you are very experienced with meditation. I have been meditating for a couple months and still can only do it for an hour or so before it gets too uncomfortable. I will be going to one in Colorado hopefully Have fun

hey Phishgirl, i did a 10 day vipassana in Cambodia back in 98 - an enriching experience
i haven't meditated like that since, but the experience changed me. i am cautious of any advice to ignore all wanting/not wanting, as this removal of 'passion' from life can be a backward step if taken to excess, but overall i'd certainly recommend a dip into vipassana. great books too (read 'the art of living' if you get a chance).

Wow... Talk about synchronicity, a shaman-esque friend I was asking for grounding guidance from, told me he thinks Vipassana would be really good for me. Then someone revives this 11 year old thread!? I need to make time for this to happen eventually.
