Help ID species of Gymnopilus
    #3161497 - 09/21/04 08:40 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hi,
I've been having phenomenal luck
finding gymnopilus..Here in RI.. I can't
seem to pin down an ID on this one..
help me if you can.. Nofindum..

1-cap-orange when young turning deep almost bronze with age.
2-cap texture-smooth, not visid slight dark spotting peels off paper thin..
slight indentation at stipe attachment becomming pronounced with age.
3-cap margin-thin and fraying every 1/8th of and inch.
4-cap flesh spongy yellowish orange..bruising darker.
5-gills close attached, forked at margin appear to be adnate..
6- veil remnants present, although easily fading away.
7-stipe slender, "for gyms", tough bendable to a point then breaking..but not clean, stays attached..outer portion of stipe stringy, inner core soft, spongy, yellowish/orange bruising darker orange..
8-base slightly bulbous at attachment.
9-habitat rotting wood, either oak or maple.. dark moist lowlying area.. Most likely a wash out whith heavy rains.
10-spore print orange!!
11- oh measurments...cap 2-4 inches across.
2-3 inches overall height..
1/4 inch stipe thickness..

By the way smell sweet as a gym and taste twice as bitter.... Thanks for the help Nofindum....

well the pictures are not up to par,
for identifying Gymnopilus at least..

lets start here, i know you say they had a veil but,
i have a monograph for Gymn's and am willing to help ya

let's start here.
pick 1 or 2.

1. Veil forming a membranous to densely fibrillose, persistant veil

2. Veil absent, or present and fugacious, not forming a persistant annulus

---------

when identifying gymns, this is where you start, the veil.

Thanks for responding gg...
I pick #2. I could have sworn
they had veils, the other day
but upon reinspection after taking
spore prints they are barely visible...
or not there at all... Thanks for the help GG
