I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this after doing a little research, but I thought I'd throw it on here to see what people said. So the question is: Can a black light be used as the only source of light for shrooms?

PF would tell you no and that after several generations you could end up with non sporulating mushrooms. Some would say yes some no. Sounds like a risk to me...

Mycelium will pin and fruit under UV but it will develop genetic damage that will show up several generations down the line. If you're not printing and you just grow from purchased syringes, UV light will work, I suppose, since you will not be propagating the genetic line, but the only good reason to use it is if you *MUST* be stealthy.

I'm curious, why do you want to use UV light?

i belive that is how the penis envy strain was made and maby i heard once that is why the pf strain has so meny aborts and mutaints

According to its creator, Robert McPherson, the PF strain (also knwon as Matias Romero strain) was reverted to a pre-UV slant after the genetic damage was discovered. :mushroom2:

The question was mainly for curiosity's sake. Stealth is not a big concern, I had a black light lying around and I was wondering if I could use that instead of leaving the light on in my closet (I consider it overkill since it's a big closet.

Maybe I'll try it some time just for kicks. I've got 18 cakes pinning or on their way to pinning, maybe after that. Though, I think i'll go the WBS route next. Thanks for the info guys.
