Network connections?
    #3161211 - 09/21/04 07:43 PM (13 years, 5 days ago)

Does anyone know if it's possible to have someone connect to your LAN, that is not actually connected?

You see, I'm trying to get my friend to be in my LAN, but I'm not sure how. Would there be a tutorial on this if it's even possible?

maybe virtual private networking. But I'm not sure if I understand your question completely.

I'll tell you the situation.

Me and my friend downloaded a game, but you need the CD key to play it over the net... but it doesn't require one to play over a LAN.

I have a LAN set up on 3 computers at my home. So I can see the files of the two other computers on my computer. That type of LAN.

So I was thinking if he could connect to the LAN that my 3 computers are on, he'd be able to see the game, and connect to it.

You are going to have to be more specific. So your house has a LAN with 3 computers. Where is your friend and his computer?

you have a peer to peer network and want your friend to have access as though he is local to it?

set up a VPN between his computer and the computer that will host. Make sure you are members of the same workgroup. I think with windows that it will create a virtual interface (thus the name virtual private network) for the connection and assign it a new IP (192.168.x.x)

Then try to make sure the game uses the VPN connection (which in turn goes out the real connection over the net) and sees your friend locally.

If you need help setting up a VPN, there is the windows integrated and there are clients. Google a how-to or FAQ for details on the setup.
I know this works because I once hosted an FTP server with my friends entire collection included via a mapped drive over a VPN. But I couldn't surf the net because it would see the VPN as being the gateway and timeout on everything (I don't know whether that was caused by IP or DNS *shrug*

That's probably more than you asked for but it's a train of thought, however fragmented...

Thanks, yes, that's pretty much it I think... I'll try and figure it out now that I know what to look for.

Another option is a remote access program to connect to one of your pc's to run the game. That may be a laggy connection depending on the speed of both his line and your own.
Supposedly radmin is the app of choice at the moment. It's on suprnova.org.

Didn't Kali do this a long time ago? I never really used it much, but back in the days of Duke Nukem 3D and Red Alert, I'm sure it was used to allow LAN gaming over the net (I think it used IPX?).

What's the game? maybe someone can find a spare key...

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.
