That's a very nice picture.

Don't get me wrong, I know your damn good at what you do, but looking at the pic and seeing the large number of pine needles all around it, are you positive it's not G. tsugae? Did you check the flesh color?

As I said, I know you know your mushrooms, but all those pine needles make it look like it's growing in the wrong place.

I think you have an excellent point. The habitat and the more orange color of the fruit surface both point to tsugae.

The two species are very close in appearance and difficult to seperate at times.

And I also agree with Joshua too that it is close n but not the exact Chinese mushroom. OF course the Japanese call the Reeshi.

Still a beautiful foto GGreatOne234 and hello Joshua. How goes things down south of us?

odd considering the locations it is limited to ..

Quote:

This mushroom is closely related to Ganoderma lucidum and is virtually indistinguishable from that species. However, Ganoderma tsugae is partial to conifers--especially hemlock-- and is limited to northeastern North America. Additionally, it has whitish, rather than brownish flesh. Otherwise it is recognized, like Ganoderma lucidum, by its varnished, reddish cap and stem.

Edibility is not reliably recorded for Ganoderma tsugae. It is too tough and woody to prepare for the plate, and I do not recommend preparation as a tea (see my comments on edibility for Ganoderma lucidum), since both the edibility and taxonomy (see comments below) of this species are uncertain.
