Diploid's Lighting Tek
    #3159595 - 09/21/04 12:05 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Although not directly on-topic, I think this is somewhat germane to the subject of Cultivation in general.

I'm often asked for suggestions on how to hang a growlight.  Mushrooms don't much care about light, just about anything will do, but plants are another matter.  They usually require bright lights when grown indoors or in stealth away from natural light.  These lights are big, unwieldy, and fragile, but if you hang them right, they can be easy to work with and very agile.

This is a 400 watt High Pressure Sodium light.  The ballast transformer is on the floor out of the images, but you can see the high-voltage cord running from the left.  The 'string' used to suspend the light is nylon twine which you can find at any mega hardware store. The braided variety is better than the twisted variety because it resists abrasion and is more elastic, so it better absorbs mechanical shocks that might otherwise damage the light tube, but either will work.  When you cut it to size, melt the cut ends with a lighter or it will unravel and make a mess.

The line is attached to the wall with two drywall anchors.  This way, you can vary the height of the lamp by just changing how much of it is wound onto the two anchors.  It's then run under a towel holder so that it's more parallel with the lamp housing, but this isn't absolutely necessary.

Next, the line goes to the ceiling where I've attached two drawer handles again using drywall anchors.  Then the twine drops to suspend the lamp housing.

With this arrangement, you can easily vary the height of the lamp as your plants grow and you can even incline the housing to shine light preferentially in one direction. Be careful not to incline the lamp too far as many are designed to operate in one orientation only.  Fortunately, I've found that most will easily tolerate 15 degrees or more of inclination.

All the holes in the drywall can be easily and cheaply repaired with a spackling compound when you decide to take the light down. All the supplies required are common and sold in the Fasteners section of any big hardware store. Remove the light bulb before you start setting this up or it will get banged around and broken as you work!

The attached pics illustrate the details.  Click to enlarge.

:smoking: Good luck!

The anchor point in the wall.  This allows you to vary the height and inclination of the lamp housing:

The suspension in the ceiling. Those are drawer handles. They're metal and very smooth so the twine slides effortlessly through them as if they were pulleys:

Here's a shot of the operating lamp. Look closely to see the twine approaching diagonally from the bottom left then down from the ceiling:

And this is what the lamp housing looks like when inclined toward the runt plant to give it an advantage.  Just pull differentially on the twine as you adjust the height of the lamp to adjust the angle:

And finally:

A tear of joy just rolled down my cheek.

Honestly though, I just fell out of my chair laughing. I don't know why I find it so funny, but I couldn't stop. I really like your giant bubble-like bong, too!

You're welcome.  BTW, that pic is way dummied down so it'll fit on the server.  The original is spectacular, but it's a big file.  If you wanna see it and others shot with a D70, PM me and I'll hook you up with my FTP server.

what kind was that kind, looks tasty,
That was grown off cuttings from a Cindy-99 F2 seed grow.  I had seven girls and kept the tastiest one to mother cuttings.  She's been making little girls for almost two years:

Here's the mother when she was a baby:

And here are some of her daughters:

and how do you cure it
Oh man, that's the trick.  Growing these things is easy but making them a pleasure to smoke vs. a choking, gagging experience is what it's all about.

One of these days I'll write up a comprehensive drying/curing tek, but I have a few other projects ahead of that.  Meanwhile, there's some good info on drying and curing in the FAQ at:

http://overgrow.com/

i think its vastly under-rated part of the grow

:smirk: You have no idea how right you are!!
