Public Policy Question
    #3159831 - 09/21/04 12:59 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

ok i take this class called public policy. in todays lecture we learned that throughout american history about every 50 years a 3rd party would rise to power within our gov't. but that cycle was interrupted in the 20th century. so why is it that 3rd parties have so much trouble now?? your opinions??

my guess is they dont have the $$$$$

Easy. The two parties want to maintain the duopoly, so they pass voting legislation designed to prevent any third party from rising to power.

What SS7 said, combined with a public that believes every issue has an answer at either side of the political spectrum.
Perot had all sorts of money and wasn't able to do too much with it.

I think what he's asking is if in the past 3rd parties have been able to take control what has stopped that from happening now.

Are you saying that the two parties have only recently wanted to maintain power? Why did the two parties historically allow the rise of a 3rd party?

My understanding is that it has only been in the past century that the US has adopted what's known as the "Australian ballot," which heavily favors a duopoly. However, I have to say it doesn't seem like there's ever really been a real viable third party. The Republican party didn't have to compete with two parties when it emerged, as the Whigs were already on the way out. It was just a matter of them replacing a party which had been crumbling from the inside for a while.
