Global Warning: Bulletins from a Warmer World
    #3154203 - 09/19/04 09:36 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

There's so much political talk these days--let's change it up with some environmental issues!

If you all have the opportunity PLEASE check out the latest National Geographic magazine!!!  It's a 74 page article on all the latest issues and stats from global climate change.

Here's a link to the intro essay and some other internet resources.

Here's the letter from the editor:

"After a decade as Editor in Cheif, I have a pretty good idea which articles will provoke a lot of angry letters.  Whenever we publish stories that cahllenge widely held beliefs, some readers get mad, and they write to let us know.

Well, we're about to do it again.  We're devoting 74 pages of this issue to a three-part series of stories on global climate change, and I'd be willing to bet that we'll get letters from readers who don't believe global climate change is real, and that humans contribute to the problem.  Some readers will even terminate their memberships.

Why would I publish articles that make people angry enough to stop subscribing?  That's easy.  These three stories cover subjects that are too important to ignore.  From Antarctica to Alaska to Bangladesh, a global warming trend is altering habitats, with devastating ecological and economic effects.

So I'm asking you--even those of you who don't believe the Earth is getting warmer and that human behavior is a contributing factor--turn to page 2.  This isn't science fiction or a Hollywood movie.  We're not going to show you waves swamping the Statue of Liberty.  But we are going to take you all over the world to show you the hard truth as scientists see it.  I can live with some canceled memberships.  I'd have a harder time looking at myself in the mirror if I didn't bring you the biggest story in geography today."

It was a really good article, and though it didn't directly explain detailed data on human involvement on climate change (probably because most scientific people have already decided that to be fact), it was a fantastic article.

Believer or not, please read it if you get the chance!

If there was a link to it, I'd read it, but I don't get National Geographic.

The thing is, "most" "scientific people" haven't already decided that to be fact. Here's just one of hundreds I could have picked: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main....09/20/ixop.html

This topic springs up at least ten times a year, and I have to ask just what this has to do with politics or activism or law.

Pinky, the issue of global warming, for better or for worse, is intimately tied to politics and activism. If we're contributing to it, then the question is what we should do about it.

is that because it's an opinion article?

MOST scientists have. check out the IPCC. thats the most i can argue about scientists. the IPCC is the most respected opinion--and majority, mind you--in the world of the top climatologists from hundreds of nations.

if you dont believe that, then theres nothing more i can do to convince you, honestly.

Exactly .... if. That's a freakin' humungous if.

Before deciding what (if anything) should be done, does it not make sense to determine whether or not anything needs to be done at all?

That's exactly why this article is relevant. Personally, I'd be quite surprised if it turned out that we had nothing to do with global warming.

its called the precautionary principle: better safe than sorry.

better to conserve our resources than use them faster than we can sustain and/or cause detrimental effects to the earth.

Actually, that is incorrect. MOST scientists (and by the way, what is the opinion of someone with a PhD in the metabolism of lipids, for example, worth compared with the opinion of someone with a PhD in cosmology, for example? Bupkes.) haven't. That's my whole point.

check out the IPCC.

Done that.

f you dont believe that, then theres nothing more i can do to convince you, honestly.

Contrary to your belief, it is not the majority opinion of the world's climatologists that climate change currently occurring is due to man's efforts. There have been numerous papers by distinguished climatologists in peer-reviewed scientific literature showing that the computer models are flawed, that the extrapolation from indirect measuring methods of data purporting to show temperature before the invention of accurate instruments is too vague to be of value, that satellite data and balloon measurements from the last two decades do not support the thesis of manmade climate change, that some of the key papers published which tend to support manmade climate change (and quoted and built on by others) have been shown to have flaws (deliberate or otherwise) in their methodology and data massaging, and more. As well, more than one team of solar observers has pointed out that the sun has been entering another period of increased output in the last few decades.

If you are unaware of those facts, there's nothing more I can do to convince you, honestly.

So you're a fan of nuclear power plants? Me too. Here's some activism we can both agree on: convince the environazis to lay off their opposition to nuke plants. It's been almost three decades since a new one was built in the US.

Nuclear energy is extremely cost-inefficient, and only manages to stay competitive because it's heavily subsidized by the government.

i believe very strongly in the fact that global warming is in fact caused by human activity. we combust fossil fuels at a rate that we cannot sustain; where do these gases go? nowhere? i dont think so. our CO2 concentration is higher now than it has been in the past 1/2 billion years. simple combustion of carbon chains (fossil fuels) equals CO2 (not to mention CH4 and N20)

it is definitely a known fact that not ALLLLLL of the data (i.e., balloon/satellite data) is not 100% accurate, but isn't that the nature of science? we are never 100% sure about ANYTHING, we can just have statistics. and the overwhelming evidence is that the statistics tell us we are messing with a delicate system.

there is nothing incorrect in this statement: "we are combusting fossil fuels faster than the rate that we can replace them, and that they are increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere"

anything beyond that is just guessing until we really know how badly we've screwed ourselves.

ss7 is right; if solar plants were subsidized as much as nuclear plants they'd be more efficient without the environmental ramifications.

That is true of all forms of energy generation other than hydroelectric power and electricity generated through burning stuff.

Actually, that is incorrect. MOST scientists

This is plain wrong. Most scientists DO.

Wern't you the guy who posted that article claiming "17000 scientists say global warming doesn't exist" before I pointed out to you the petition was a legendary peice of disinformation signed by "scientists" like Ginger Spice?

BTW, even Ginger later said she'd never even signed it and agreed there was global warming
