question about reusing casing substrate

I just had both of my casings finish their second flush. I took the substrate from both casings and combined it into a new vermiculite/peat moss casing. My question is, can I expect the first flush to be a little lower due to the fact that im using spend substrate? Also, if the growth isnt diminished at all, then how many times can you reuse the substrate before its no good?

You shoulda left them to go as they were...just leave it as is until it stops fruiting. Then its no good anymore.

It is possible to use spent cakes to spawn more substrate. But to just case two spent cakes together and expect them to work wonders isn't what i beleieve you have read. Although it can put a a few flushes, but like hyphae said, you are opening yourself up to contams. Goodluck man, i do hope it works.

Oh i know that you should, But sometimes you dont feel like making new spawnand have some spent or about to be spent cakes or casings and feel like it. Just something you can do, not necessarily should.

this might be a dumb question, but are there certain areas in the united states that are more prone to contamination? Because every casing i have ever done, i havent steralized the casing layer. In fact the only thing ive ever steralized was the 1/2 pint jars i used to make cakes, and i have never gotten anything contaminated. btw i live in yakima, washington, its kinda like a desert climate, pretty dry around here, not like the west side of washington at all.

SPENT cakes cant be used to make casings. Cakes can be made to make casings after a few flushes however its not the best idea. Just make them casings right from the start then when they are spent, toss them out. You can't magically make more shrooms come up by mixing it around. Shrooms will come until there are no more nutrient and once thats done all you have is mycelium. If you add that to more nutrients (spawn to something) then you could possibly grow more from there but chances are you'd just get contams unless you try and do an outdoor thing.

exactly scatmanrav.
my suggestion is that if it's not getting cold yet where you live, try one of the outdoor teks. I read and basically improvised with what I had... I used a spent pf cake and a contaminated one that hadn't finished and dried up with a little cow poo under and on top of the mycelium, put another thin layer of mycelium on top, and then used my left over coir/vermiculite mix on top... i'm getting knots as of today.

Outdoors nature has a way (plenty of fresh air) of keeping contams down with beneficial bacteria also Poo works great OD also so why not be safe instead of chancing it?
