to fruit or to patch??
    #3153702 - 09/19/04 07:52 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

I'm wondering if I should patch this casing at this point, leave it or fruit it?...

I'm a little nervous about patching since I still don't understand exactly what that's supposed to do...If you cover up the spots that are colonized to let the rest catch up, then what happens to the spots that get patched since they're now buried. I obviously also what to avoid overlay...

Patch then fruit 2-3 days later. You only lay a thin coating over the overlayed spots, just enough to cover it. The myc should be through again in 2-4 days.

fucking

scratch and patch that shit up. the patched spots just move up through the patch, at the same time the rest of the myc. breaks through. giving u a nice even pinset. after u poatch, give it a day and ahalf, till u see sum real small dots poking through, then cold shock the sucker and give him light. oh, and be sure to leave tons of hills and valleys int he casing, mushies love that shit;)

ok - can you explain the "hills and valleys" thing a little better?...I remember seeing this in the FAQ's but I didn't understand it fully. I thought the casing layer should be pretty damn smooth..Is this the same as scratching?

Basically yes! your getting the idea!!! You do not want a perfectly smooth surface you want texture! GL

ok, so using a fork I could gently scratch the surface of the casing layer?...should this be done when the casing is being prepared, or after it's colonized?

Well her I go again but (and this is just me folks) I pretty much think patching is a waste of time once you have the timing of when to fruit down.

Myself once the casing looks like yours I put it in the chamber. Patched not patched the results never changed.

South Americans, Hawaiians, Malabar, Orissa
None of em were patched. (I said I was lazy)

Well Magash, some would argue that your pinsets arent even and that patching is the only way to get an even pinset but your on the other hand come up in patches. Personally I only see one patch and its all over the damn casing  I cant get results like that without patching though :frown:

#1 Magash has been growing long enough where his substrates are pretty damn level so patching won't do much to improve his flushes also Magash uses smaller contains which makes things easier yet thats just basic.  Cornelius lay your casing out using a fork make sure it has an even profile and texture and you'll be golden. One more point early break throughs will pin first and these will mature first giving your flush an uneven profile which isn't really a problem except that you have to wait for the laggers to mature in order to harvest this results in the next flush having to wait, this may be a finer detail that only those interested taking that extra step will appreciate. Magash saying it's a waste of time tells me that your not taking others situations into account, with all respects I've seen patching make a substantial difference in many growers flushes, not just a better pinset but also a more even harvest  GL guys

I think I'm going to skip patching this time around and try it for my next casings...I don't have that much to work with and I want to keep my hands off as much as possible to avoid contams since it'll probably be another month before I have a new batch....

Thanks for the advice everyone
