Help! Melted plastic jars - No. 5 plastic :(
    #3155107 - 09/20/04 09:45 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Yes i know it was a very very stupid thing to do, but i accidently forgot about my plastic jars sterlising on the stove, and resultingly the plastic (No.5 - the decor telefresh containers) has compleatly melted.

I've managed to wipe out the vast majority with paper (keeping it warm so the plastic doesn't set), but there is still a fine film over the inside of a very expensive scanpan. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid the last thin layer of warm platic, hopefully so the pan will be fine to cook in again?

It has only just happened, its all still warm and i really want to deal with it before it sets.

not likely to remove all of the plastic. you may need some nasty solvents to clean it. good luck, man!

Happened to me once, or should I say a stoned idiot of a housemate

He left the stove on with a plastic strainer sitting on it.

In the end we just cooked the shit off it

allow the plastic to set and you should be able to peel it out
use a knife tip to get under the edge and lift it.

I agree, the nice thing with plastics is it's ability to delaminate when used with incompatable substances.
