After the needle is glowing red how long do wait to make sure its cooled enough?
I cant get the PF tek to work and Im going through all the details to see what i did wrong. Ive tried it many times and havent gotten any sort of mycelium in any jar.
They all have started to smell a weird scent of fermentation/unpleasant smell each time i've tried.
I've done everything exactly as all of the guides say...I dont understand it.

I usually flame the needle red starting at the tip then going as far as I can then making my way back up to the tip. Then just kind of squirt a little solution with the needle pointing up so that a drop forms and you can use that drop to go up and down the needle to cool it off

I use an alcohol wipe to cool the needle.

That fermented smell is a sign of bacterial contamination. When I was doing the PF Tek I too had a period during which every jar fell to bacterial contamination. After changing every other variable without success I finally changed the brown rice flour that I was using. That did it; I went from 100% failure to 100% success. I had been buying a bulk bin flour that was obviously contaminated. If you are boiling your jars as I was, try changing the BR flour that you are using. Good luck. edited for spelling

buy a pressure cooker.. so many of my PF tek problems were cured instantly for like 50 bucks at wal*mart.. hehe but actually.. i used a lighter when i did the PF tek, wasn't so careful about sterile techniques. i got some nasty green mold shit on my cakes.. one or two of them actually worked. doubtful if that helps but uh.. yeah.. i'm just toasted.

I've only been using rubbing alcohol to sterilize my needle too.
My first attempt at growing was a no-go, but not because of contams.. just.. nothing grew. My syringe was old.
All of the jars stayed sterile for 2 weeks. Slowly, they started to get contaminated.. 2/7 were still sterile(smelled good) after I finally gave up at 4 weeks.
I'm honestly not sure if the contams came from when I innoculated or what, but it seems like it would've been visable before 2 weeks if it was in there.. molds and such grow fast.
I just tried again with fresh syringes on the 18th, using the same alcohol-soaked tissue technique to both sterilize and keep the needle out of the air in between innoculations.
Hope it works.
