This is my first time at growing. I did everything right and followed everything to a T in production of the substrate, brown rice flower, vermiulite, and spring water. pressure cooked at 15psi for 60-70 mins. waited 24 hours before opening pressure cooker to insure room temp. The jars look nice and very threaded like. I injected the jars on sept 1st. I am unsure what these grey patches are in the substrate. they do not look like mycelium but they grow next to well threaded mycelium. my first jar actually in some spots had mycelium grow over the grey spots and thread much larger then normal. Is this normal? Also there is some white fuzz ontop of the substrate. Note that ontop of my substrate is an inch or so of vermiculite. This should stop this fuzz from contaminating the jar correct? And if so, what is this white fuzz?

Thanks for your time

All I know is that anything other than a nice brilliant white is bad news.

I have some jars that looked like that... it was just weak mycellium. After a while, strong growth showed up on those spots and the whole thing just got grown over with strong, ropey strands of mycelium. Just give it a little TLC, make sure it's incubating at about 86 degrees F and you should be ok.

it looks like weak myc but if you watch it closely you should be able to tell for sure in a few days it is a nice white color, so that is encouraging to me i'd imagine that in a few days you will discover that it is myc

Ya I wouldn't worry yet looks good to me too. Myc will often grow lighter and wispier on dryer substrate. If this was a multispore then it's more than likely a less agressive substrain of myc. GL and enjoy!!!
