White chanterelles and assorted other fungi

Decided to get out and do some more mushroom hunting saturday morning. I spent the majority of the time looking for chanterelles, had no luck with them west of the pass so I decided to keep going east to some more familiar territory and try my luck over there. the last place I stopped I found these two tiny lone Cantharellus cibarius finding two tiny chants really kind of frustrated me more than made me happy , they were right next to the trail with no others around and it was starting to rain kinda hard so I turned around and headed back towards my car laughing about my pathetic find. Anyway, I got a bit closer to the car and decided to step off into the woods again for a last try and ran into a nice patch of Cantharellus subalbidus, the white chanterelle, which I had never seen before, I didn't know they got so large. I was definitely happy to see them though , I estimate I got a good 3-4 pounds at least out of that one patch That was the main event of my day hunting , I didn't pick anything else but here's the rest of my pics: Sparassis crispa, the cauliflower mushroom, first time I've found one Hericium ramosum, saw some Hericium abietis too Pretty sure these are Lyophyllum decastes, the fried chicken mushroom, first time I've found them as well yet more Boletus mirabilis, these things are seriously everywhere you look right now red amanitas, probably muscaria. yellow amanitas, probably A. muscaria, didn't check the base of the stem though white amanitas, pretty sure they aren't virosa, had a scaly caps like muscaria, and the volva wasn't separated from the stem, maybe A. muscaria var. alba Also saw a few B. edulis, oyster mushrooms, sulfur shelves, lots of slippery jacks and other random Boletes, tons of Russulas and a metric fuckload of Gomphidius subroseus, none of which I took pics of for some reason. Not too bad though, 10 different edible species found in one hunt , even though I only took the chants. Next on my to-find-list is matsutake, anyone here picked em around Washington? tips ? I hear they?re tricky? That's all DH

Hey DH....Excellent finds... I was mushroom hunting Saturday morning too... around the North Bend area. It was obvious that someone had raided the Chantrelles a day or two before I got there...all I saw was babies and contams.
There sure was a good variety of other shrooms growing though. It rained pretty heavy up there...hehe.
Here are a couple photos...

Lyophyllum decastes
Haven't seen those on the west side of the Cascades...but I used to get truckloads of them around Wenatchee every year.
Not a lot to choose from when you are gathering in the Eastern part of the state...so they became my good friends. They dry well and the flavor really improves with the drying.
Nice outhing for you!

damn, I'd say you had a helluva lucky day with all those finds! were you up high in the mountains? what elevation were you at? I am just north of Bellingham, so we are basically in the same climate and same type of habitat but i haven't found any chanterelles yet.

Nice white chantie score! I've never found those before. How do they compare [smell/flavor] to cibarius?
I'm with you on matsutake. . .I'd just like to see, smell, and taste a fresh one. Such a reputation!

thanks for the comments everyone, I drove back to seattle this morning, made one stop and filled a paper grocery sack with more of the white chants in less than half an hour without even walking out of sight of my car , good picking for sure. now I just have to figure out what to do with them all . elevation where I found em today was approx. 2200' according to my GPSr, the patch I found saturday was around 2500'. I haven't ever found more than a couple bites worth of C. cibarius/formosus, but these have the same smell and taste as far as I can tell, they seem bigger too, the largest ones today had 6 inch caps and about 2 inch thick stems. they're kind of a bitch to clean compared to the orange ones I've found though. Anywho, didn't get any habitat shots of todays finds, but here's a couple of the whole haul, I don't think I'm gonna be needing any more DH

oh, btw, how do ya'll preserve them? I heard fry them up and freeze, but I'm not sure if I should let all the water they release evaporate or use that to freeze them in...

I cook most of the water out and they freeze well, it probably work well the other way too.

the chantrelles I found were snow-white. Those look pretty cream-colored.
