damp-rid????
    #3153230 - 09/19/04 03:38 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Can anyone please confirm or deny whether Damp-Rid is available in Canada???...I've checked dozens of hardware stores including the big ones, and they all look at me like I'm insane when I ask for Damp-Rid or anything similar....

Is there any way to efficiently dry besides using dessicant?..

I've got a dehydrator, but it uses heat, and I've heard heat causes loss of potency...

You can go to a pet store and get the silica cat litter which is what I use, It is now readily available. Also people use Epsom salts too although silica is a superior product.

In canada you must have de-icer pellets!!!
Calcium cloride.. sold in stores to melt ice
on the driveway and such... It Works
well... Just read the label and get as close to 100%
as you can.... that's all damp rid is anyway...

mine is 97% calcium cloride... just place your matter
to be dried a few inches above it... and seal the con-
tainer air tight.... wait 4 or 5 days,, open and voila.. dry
organic matter.... Nofindum....

It's a one time use really and really needs to be baked first for best results but yes that definitely will work too.

Hyphae, i read that the salts lower the RH more then silica, though recharging silica is much easier and cleaner.

Silica gel is far superior IMO and reusable, also alot of it depends on the grain size GrOwer Silica comes in different sizes from a sand to large silica cat litter size and I definitely believe it makes a difference but IME the cat litter has work just fine with no problems what so ever.

anhydrous chloride is readily available at all Rona stores (Home Depot as well i should think), in canada. look in the cleaning supplies aisle. it will have the brand name along the lines of dampeze or dry-eze. or some such. do not put fruits directly on the chloride! here fast and dirty bucket setup i made:

5 gal. plastic bucket
8x 1" screws
2 sheets of door screen

screw four screws into sides of bucket 2-3 inches from bottom until the protrude into the interior. cut one screen to fit the mouth of the bucket and place on the screws. screw four more screws into bucket 3-4 inches from the top of bucket. pour anhydrous chloride onto bottom screen. place second screen on the top screws, and layer fruits on this screen. snap on lid. remember to drain any water that will accumulate in the bottom of the bucket. this might take awhile, but the chloride will drain excess water into the bottom (hence the screen).

worked great for me.

...but that's what causes the drying action. There's no fan in my particular unit....

Instead of using that window screen, which are great as is in the frame for air drying, buy some heavy guage 1/2" mesh screen. Most hardware stores carry this. Cut it to fit in your drying bin with about 2" extra one each end going the short way. A square bin is much easier to use for this meathod. Bend it like this I_____I only place it with the legs down. For the next row up make it a bit smaller and leave a wire or two on each corner so it locks into the mesh below.

Well you air dry firt for a day or two then get them bone dry using the dessicant. Mushrooms are ~90% water so they loose moisture quiclky in warm dry air but to get that last little bt of water out use dessicant. If you used dessicant to dry from teh start you'd need to recharge it after drying a batch, while if you air dry first it should last a few. After a dessicant drying the mushrooms are cracker dry and crunchy rather them soft when air dryed.

FYI leevalley.com sells silica drying crystals, you can order them online.

About $12 for 500g and completely re-useable.

Just don't place any edibles directly in contact with the crystals.

I never fan dry my mushrooms, I stick them directly in my damp-rid chamber, they usually take about 24-36 hours to dry. I shit you not so dont doubt me. I replace the damprid for every 2 ounces of dry mushys.

That is a foolish use of damp-rid IMHO! A prefan dry gets rid of the majority of excess water so the damp-rid can do it's job much more efficiently. "Cracker".
No disrespect but thats just bad advice.

I found a 20 lb bag of calcium chloride at a local hardware store, but it's only 76% - will this do?
