alfs got some brf jars in the colonizing process but they seem to have stunted right before the mycelium reached the bottom, what could be the cause of this and how can alf help his jars finish up?

Stalled growth can be caused by too much moisture, too little moisture, contamination, or a build up of CO2.
Flip the jars over!!! This should help get things going again!

Gonna say it again thats beneficial to myceliums growth (fact) You guys need to get on the same page! As far as stalled growth can be caused by too much moisture, too little moisture, contamination ya got that right. You did forget lack of gas exchange and here we go again! Also make sure theres no tape on the holes. GL

Try turning the jars upside down and tapping them down into your palm or onto a table, so that the substrate isn't pressed right against the bottom of the jar. Leave them upside down and hopefully the bottom will colonize.

Funny, the dude is haveing problems with the TOPS of his jars (rye). The bottom always has been colonizing first, and then slowly, ever so slowly it starts moving up or it just stops. He thinks the rye is too dry......
What would you recommend?

I agree they could very well be drying on top. If theres plenty of moisture down low then flipping it could help, also covering the top with foil if not already. Those may help, I wouldn't inject sterile water as that may cause more problems than it would solve. You can shake it one more time to redistribute the dry grains also. Sounds like he could use a slightly higher moisture content next time. GL

Thanx...He'll keep you updated.....The tops are already covered in foil, maybe he'll try shaking and flipping.

If things get desperate too, you can isolate the colonized portions from the uncolonized and case too or do a transfer.

Never use tape on the holes. You need air to get in.

After the jar has cooled, the only real barrier you need in a pf tek style jar is that layer of vermiculite at the top. just be sure to get rid of it when you put it in the fruiting chamber, it'll be holding all those little contams that might want to get in.
you're increasing gas exchange when you take the tape off. do it, it'll help you out.

You could do that. I like to leave them coverd till I see the myc growth then I remove the tape.

I feel innocuation time is the time to remove tape if you use it (I don't waste my time myself) not because it makes a difference in growth at this stage (it doesn't) but because it's so damn convenient just to leave it off after innoculating. Whats more convenient is not using it in the first place! Just an experienced growers $.02
