Moving to another country?
    #3152022 - 09/18/04 09:45 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Is there a country out there that meets all of the following
requirements?...

1. Electricity, hospitals, automobiles, and modern things that I
have become accustomed to in America.
2. Respects my gun rights.
3. Doesn't tax me to death. I get to keep most of my money.
4. Is stable(no revolutions, kidnappings, and stuff like that).
5. The government stays the fuck out of my life.
6. It is not terribly expensive to live there.
7. The people are down to earth and nice.
8. It has natural scenic beauty.
9. It is has a decent population but is not terribly over-crowded.

If you can name a place like that I want to move there.

I'm not certain about this, but from what I've heard, Switzerland comes pretty close to those requirements(not only do they allow gun ownership--they require it), but I'm fairly certain that it's hard to immigrate there.

I've actually been to Switzerland before. Everybody seemed nice.
Too bad I can't speak Swiss German.

I'm sure if you studied hard enough, you could learn it.

They actually give you a gun, I think. Every citizen is officially considered part of the Swiss army, which means if they ever go to war, you're drafted. But fortunately(probably partially because of this fact) they haven't been to war in hundreds of years.

If you had a country that great, would you let a bunch of foreigners come in and take advantage of it?

edit: deleted innacurate hearsay.

immigration is next to impossible.  its the best country ive ever been to, beautiful, but extremely expensive and unfortunately immigration is not really much of an option.

did i mention there are weed shops there too? :stoned:

My understanding is that they have almost everything privatized there, and taxes are relatively low. Guess we'll have to find some source to see which one of us is right.

my mistake it looks like they're about 23rd, behind the U.S. even. ive heard stories about them having it worked out so they work like 4 day weeks and the minimum wage is very high. I've also heard stories about cities having strict laws about how your garden/house look and things like that.

You've got Sweden and Switzerland mixed up Tao. Sweden is your socialist paradise -- Switzerland is, at least relative to Sweden, a bastion of liberty.

According to that website, it's one spot ahead of the U.S. in economic freedom.

And Sweden is still in the 'free' category plus UK is actually ahead of US. Weird.

Have to look at more than just the rankings of the two. These stats stand out most to me:

This study alone does not indicate Switzerland as being immensely(relative to the United States which I presume you would be 'fleeing') free nor does it indicate Sweden as being immensely socialist(relative to the United States, etc). More research needed.

i am going to help ou out here,

it is wrong on these points:

5. The government stays the fuck out of my life.
6. It is not terribly expensive to live there.
7. The people are down to earth and nice.

The government generally does, but you must conform strictly to society there, or you are outcast.

It is the MOST expensive

The people there are closed off and full of hate.

PLEASE don't move to switzerland, just a warning. My sister lived there for a year and it was quite traumatic. If you are a sheeple, you will get along quite well there. If you are not, stay away.

*note
I am not only speaking from my sister's perspective
she managed to find one really fucked up other person who was sort of outcast, but was full swiss. He was quite nice, but fucked up because of Swiss culture.

My grandfather lived in Switzerland for something like 25 years. He loved it.

But it's not the libertarian paradise some people around here seem to think it is. As morrowmind pointed out, it is a very conformist society and you will find many doors closed in your face if you don't conform. Swiss people's thinking is a bit too rigid to qualify as "down to earth."

Prices there are astronomical. While the tax burden is light (though not THAT light if you consider things like VAT), by no means can it be said that the government leaves you the fuck alone. If fighting breaks out, you WILL be drafted. The Swiss police are control freaks, and they've got laws on the books about things like noise at night. If you turn your stereo up just a little too loud past 10 p.m. or whatever the police will be at your door in a jiffy. And of course they'll know who you are because you have to register with them as soon as you move into a new residence.

So yeah, if you're middle-aged or older and loaded then it's a paradise. Most young Swiss I know though are pretty eager to sow their wild oats elsewhere.

I can't think of a country that meets all of your requirements. Most advanced democracies have high taxes and gun laws.

The Dominican Republic comes pretty close to satisfying your shopping list.

The only caveat is the electrical situation. You need to live in a place that has a private electrical generator, because the state-supplied electricity is a disgrace.
