Microscopic examination of the spore... that would be my first guess... lemme drag out my copy of mushrooms demystified and see what it says...

That'd be gandoderma lucidum, correct?

Ling Chih, Reshi is Ganoderma lucidum. G. lucidum is not always stalked. So, if you found several growing in a clump, and some lacked a stalk, you would most likely be able to say: "Hey, look at my Reshi!". G. Curtisii always has a stalk. G. oregonense could be confused for G. Lucidum, but I believe that grows fairly exclusively in the northwest of the united states, so once out of that region you can rule it out. Then we have G. tsuage, which I believe is only found growing on conifers, so as long as those were on or near deciduous trees, you can rule that out.

Hope that helps you out.
