Older hippies were the first, now it has somehow become some kind of marketting scheme.
It is a target consumer group to an extent, prone to subtle media control. A target audiance (for musicians and artists) as well.
Look at Austin powers and how holliwood made something out of it. Hippies are in all sorts of TV ads. The fashion is also expensive, the ill hippy cloths go for mad loot where I live. But as long as you keep it real and don't allow people to tell you who you are and what to believe, you are cool in my book.

I was a hippie for a few years, but then I realized that it doesn't really matter what I do. I have my beliefs and I am guided by them and the possibilities that branch off of them.
I like the older hippies more for being first, the the newagers have thier benefits and are very loving people as well.

i see lots of ravers as "new age hippies"
PLUR
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

The new age hippies are pretty cool. But it seems like alot of the new age do it because it is "the thing to do". But I guess there are posers in every group.

yes, I meant hippie as in ' hip with the scene' .I guess the scene back in the 70's was acid and jam bands? and groupies and new age movements? the hippies of the year y2k are ravers and dopers, clubbers and new age?

The "new" hippies don't have as much excitement going for them (us?) as the old ones did. I mean, they were really changing things and really living a completely new way of life in America. Not to say that all the mud-covered hippies at my school are bad (thats one of the reasons I love my college), but there is not the feeling of doing something that has never been done before. I feel good about being surrounded by hippies in 2005, but would LOVE to go back to the 60's and see how things really were.

I love the way it is now. But I respect how the old way was a totally different life style. It seems like if you were a hippie back then, thats what you did for a living. Now you can be a hippie on the side .

New age hippies have become a controlled group unlike thier predecessors who were wild and new. They are simply alot less active.

i think of new age "hippies" as the extreme lefties. certainly things are being changed. iraq is the new modified vietnam it seems. so many oppose it. not syaing right or wrong, it always gets heated...
about 10 years ago there was a HUGE*** protest here in the carmanah valley. im sure a lot of you have heard of it. by Nitinat lake. world famouse area for windsurfing on a lake, excellent rainforest, hicking etc. the tallest tree in canada teh largest stika spruce, 2000-3000 year old red cedars, west coast trail and it goes on. anyway as is British Columbias true nature to log every fuckign twig it can they (macmillan i belive) had their eyes set on this area. long story short there was a huge protest, they chained themselves, laid acroos the stree you name it. tehre were people world wide that flew in at their own expense to protest the destruction.
that to me is teh new age hippies here. in my area you are a tree hugger, red neck, prissy bitch, or you fit in the 80% whiney drone category. if i may be so stereotypical
anyway its PISSING rain and its a thunderin, so ima go play outside

"New age" hippies are just people who have looked back and found a set of ideals that they feel works for them and are struggling to apply them in this day and age when things are just as fucked up now as they were back then. I've been called a hippie because i have long hair, smoke weed, and listen to the dead. People should watch it before they start labeling people.

In my experience, protesting results in being tear gassed and beaten with clubs. Not much change. I'd rather start a new government.. and let the old one crumble under it's own weight.

There is a difference between a protest and a riot.
