You won't get a very stable temperature with either the method you were asking about, or the other suggestion. Tub-in-tub is the ONLY way to do it right. If you don't do it that way, then you'll be complaining in a week and a half when nothing has happened in your jars yet, and we will tell you again to build a tub-in-tub. C'mon, it's $20 worth of stuff, and if you already have a fully submersible heater then it's like $6. And if you already have a tub and a heater then it's $3 for another tub.
In other words, there is no good reason to not put together a tub-in-tub the right way. So just do it. If there were any other way that worked as reliably we would be telling you to do it that way then instead of tub-in-tub. If your temps are not locked in at 80-82F degrees, you will be waiting longer (probably, MUCH longer) for things to happen, if they happen at all.
Or, that's my opinion anyway.

A 300 watt will heat things up, the water takes time to warm up (24hrs.). Like Spudz said heating pad or window heating is definitely not a smart thing to do at all, number one a dark tub could heat up well over 100+ degrees possibly killing everything inside not to mention big drop in temp as the sunlight loses contact and that heating pad will give you one hell of a fluctuating temp neither are wanted as you are looking for stable temps (82-84F.) TnT is the best way and you have everything already! GL My suggestion, just do it.

It may even stabilize in as little as 12hrs. but the point is you'll need to get a thermometer in the incubator to fine tune the temp setting. Usually takes me a day (24hrs) to get it perfect (82-84F.) And djred it always best to learn to walk before you fly and a tub full of cakes can yield quite well if you listen to the pros.
