Georgia lawn mushrooms
    #3135156 - 09/14/04 04:07 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, I live in the suburbs of north georgia, in Alpharetta, what are some mushrooms that grow in lawns here, are any of them psychoactive? I just found one that bruised blue, and I am not going to take my chances unless i find out if it is psychoactive and non-fatal. This one in particular has a thick stem, but also a very large cap that is sort of like a bowl shape with the top of the cap being relatively flat and the underside curving to the top rather than an umbrella shape. There are also a lot of mushrooms with very long and extremely skinny stems with a very thin umbrella like cap ofter about 1 inch in diameter.

Thanks,
Pizza Tran

You probably found a bluing Bolete. Does it have spongy gills. Most likely, this is an inedible mushrom. Unfortunately, there aren't any active lawn species here in GA that are recorded.

Oh, and they are not going to be deadly poisonous. Only a few of these mushrooms exist, and compared to the vast amount of other mushrooms, this is almost nothing!

It wasn't wrong at all. Sounds like a bolete to me.

it was half wrong, there are a few psilos that grow in lawns in ga as mentioned above like psilo weilli. and atlantis but the atlantis is pretty rare find. alpharetta supposedly has alot of weillis you just have to look for them. funny i live in alpharetta too but i havent found them there as of yet, i usually drive towards cherokee to find them. good luck...

Ive heard good things about weilii in cherokee county as well. Ive also found patches of weilii in alpharetta though. Theres so much new devolopment and bermuda grass in almost all the new neighborhoods. Its a perfect place to start looking.

I was refering to the statement about the mushroom being a bolete.

As far as weilii go, their natural habitat isn't actually lawns. It's recently disturbed soil. Landslides, uprooted trees, etc. Humans have provided them with the perfect environment by plowing down all the forrests and churning up the dirt. In essense humans have created a new habitat for weilii.

Damn... my information was not wrong. Sorry I didnt mention Ps. weilii but the chances of him finding those are slim when considering the myriad of other mushrooms growing in lawns. Also, he's a newbie and shouldn't be fuckin around with eating mushrooms until he's a little more experienced. It's like telling a little kid that there is candy the bottom of a sewer, he's gonna get himself hurt.

Weilli defintely grow in the alpharetta area and the most common place to find them seems to be in the average lawn in a nice neighborhood, so the chances of him finding them are not slim. In fact, a friend of mine found some within 20 minutes in the first lawn he looked in after learning about P. Weilli and it seems that there is a bunch of big finds in the area in the last couple of weeks. So look for them in lawns in your area, alpharetta and a little to the west, and you will probably find them.

^^ Eh, I haven'y been weilii hunting, but it should be known that just because you found a brownish shroom that there is a hefty chance that it is not weilii.
