Not very fertile grow area

The place I'm going to have my outdoor grow patch is kind of out of the way, under pine trees. The spot is in the shade out of direct sunlight, covered in pine needles (no plant growth) and doesn't get a whole lot of rain (very little). Now, let's say I line it with the worm casting and add the manure, straw, etc. to the patch and water it...do you think this will be a suitable place? Also, what effect would Diatomaceous Earth have on both the mushrooms and the grow patch if I applied it not directly on the mushrooms but just all around the edges of the patch?

Diatomaceous Earth would definitely keep the slugs away which can be a problem alright. your spot would need to be kept fairly moist also. Other than that it should work just fine as long as you remember moisture is always the key in growing shroomies. GL

Yeah I'll definitely remember to water the patch when dry. Does that fact that the soil is pretty much all clay make a big difference when watering my patch?

yes, clay absorbs less water than loamy and sandy soils.
