i want to cut my cakes into discs, then lay the discs in a casing (i.e. verm/discs/verm)
first off, is this a good idea? i was thinking mini-cakes casing style.
second, how thick should i cut them?

I have never cut them like that, not that it won't work.
I cut my cakes ,one time, the long way, right down the middle. Then put them ,cut side down and side by side, into a pan and case them.

i assume the results are more favorable than in a whole cake? is that better than totally breaking up the cake for casing?
your idea sounds better because less risk of contam. although i really want to see how my disc idea works...

Crumble by dunking the cake, then placing it in a new/sterile ziplock bag, then mash to nickel-size chunks. If after that there are exposed portions of substrate, let the bag itself recover in the incubator for a day or two so there's only white, then take it out of the bag and put in in your casing.

so, do you recommend always dunking before the first flush, and after each preceding flush?
