As some of you might have noticed, I have been absent from the boards lately. I have been in and out of the hospital for the last 2 weeks. What I thought was the flu turned out to be a case of aspergillus niger growing in my lungs. It damn near killed me.
I am finally off of the oxygen tanks and can get up and move around for a bit. If you have ordered from me recently and haven't received your orders yet then you can expect them to be shipped on the Monday.
My head gremlin cannot get into the States so the US orders are backed up by a week and a half. Sorry for the delays everyone and I should be back on top of things in a few days.
As a footnote, be very careful around contaminated cultures...they can be deadly. If my doctor didn't know what I did for a living I would have been dead now. This illness hits hard and fast and not being able to breathe is something that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Thank you for that post believe it or not I was discussing that with a friend 2 days ago I noticed mold spores would go every where if the got dumped out in the garbage,or nocked over. I am glad that you answered that question without me having to post Ihave a new born son and that was when I started looking into it.

Your absence was certainly noticed 3M. I hope you're feeling better now.
Does aspergillus niger in your lungs get mistaken for asthma?

Ok, I wondered what this was and after doing a search, I found a good ID plate and description of aspergillus niger. Hopefully this will help people on their toes!

How do you get this stuff growing in your lungs?
Do you inhale the spores? Do you eat contaminated mushrooms? What are the symptoms?
I just want to know what precautions I should take if I encounter this stuff.
I'm glad to know you are feeling better 3m but If you are feeling ok then I think it would be great for you to let people know as much as you can tell them about this nasty contam.

As some mof you know I grow commercial oyster mushrooms. I was composting a pile of spent substrate to use in my garden. As I was turning the pile I noticed a lot of aspergillus niger running through it but I didn't think much of it at the time since I was outside.
I guess I have been burning the candle at both ends for awhile and allowed myself to get a bit rundown and my immune system wasn't up to the spores that I inhaled. I woke up the next morning with what I thought was one bitch of a cold. By noon I couldn't breathe and passed out. My daughter called an ambulance and they rushed me to the hospital. The docs initially thought pneumonia but I came to long enough to tell them that I had been exposed to aspergillus niger and a sputum sample confirmed that it was growing in my lungs.
For 3 days I had to go through aspiration(vacuuming the lungs) IV fungicides, nebulizer inhaler containing fungicide as well as antihistamines. I have been on oxygen for almost 2 weeks now.
I spend 4 hours a day on an incline board to help my lungs drain because the first thing that the fungus attacked was the cilia in my lungs and they have no way of getting the crap out. As well, I can only sit up for short periods of time without getting dizzy and light headed but it is getting better.
Do not screw around with contams. This very nearly killed me. If I hadn't told the doc about aspergillus niger I would have received a conventional run of antibiotics and would have died. A niger isn't something that they routinely run into

though I doubt I'll be running into much aspergillus niger cultivating cubensis it still goes to show that those contams aint nothing to sneeze at...

A niger is a fairly common contam with cubes too so if you see a black contam be very careful. It is in the environment all around us but a concentrated blast when your immune system is weak can cause problems.

man, glad you are still alive!!
....your expeirience wasnt just a bad thing though,
you have taught many people here, through your serious illness, that Contams are not a Joke.
Thank god you knew what you were exposed to, many of us dont know anything about other fungi, molds, bacteria, etc...

Thanks for sharing that story 3M. One time I was in bed for a week and felt close to death after cleaning out several contaminated areas of grow space. I didn't have the same conditions as you (breathing) but it was still pretty awful, and I never went to the hospital for some crazy reason. I have had mono before, and this puts that to shame!
Whether it was related to the contams, its just a guess.

for anyone who routinely has to clean contaminated jars and plates (generally bulk growers and spore vendors), i highly reocmmend not exposing yourself to them *at all*. this can be accomplished fairly easily through pressure sterilization: collect all the contaminated containers and put em in your pressure cooker, then sterilize for an hour or so at 15psi. kinda tedious, but so is growing mushrooms! another way to do it is to fill a tub of bleach water and open the container while it is fully submerged in order to trap any spore clouds.

This may sound scary, but, i think the shroomery needs a new section on its home page named: "Health issues"
Many newbies,(including me)and specially on their first steps in mushroom cultivation....arent aware of the many different dangers, that this hobby can reveal. I think this is not something that should be ignored.What do you guys think?

Sorry to hear you got sick 3MShroom.
I use to clean my jars out once upon a time. But all those strange stinky molds and bacteria's started scaring me so just throw anyting contaminatedc out. Jars, lids, filter discs.. all of it.
Its not worth taking any chances.

Well it wasn't our friendly fun guys that got me sick. It was my gourmets that nailed me. I have a pile of spent oyster substrate that I compost for my tomato patch and my raspberries. It just turned out to be timing.
I had been doing to much and allowed myself to get run down and worn out when I got hit with the A Niger. For most healthy people it wouldn't have been a problem.
Incidentally I just got another 2 day stay at the hospital courtesy of the meds I am on. Had an allergic reaction to one of the meds. Small setback but I should be all better by this weekend...I hope

I've also heard of many people having respistory problems when exposed to high amounts of spores for a long period. Such as commercial mushroom workers, pickers, and dealers.
I'm glad to see some people have a sense of humour, even if they can't spell! ;)
