Animita Muscaria(and AM, Var formosa) UPDATE, PICS
    #3148905 - 09/17/04 05:24 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I will add any remaining pics tomorrow, right now I am to tried and  I need  sleep;)

I hit my favorite animita spot today and ended up with well over a dozen(maybe 14??..17?? more?)

I took mainly caps, but in some cases I took the whole mushroom so that I could show you guys the beauty.

Yesterday, GUMBY, you were saying something about colour variation(regrading muscaria VAR Formosa, well actually another animita that I could confuze for var formosa,I might have even picked ONE of those, along with the muscaria)

I have Red Muscaria,Orange-yellowMuscaria(VAR Formosa), and I think I even ened up with one of the pure orange animitas you were talking about.
(I dont remember the name)

I also ended up with some pure yellow Var formosa

I will have pics up later tonight , then you can see what I am really describing.

Now, the hunt itself......

The hunt took place on a  beuatifull trail ,this trail leads to a little bridge, and once I crossed that little bridge , and the creek it passes over, they(animitas) were everywhere.

At first I found one and thought,"cool, thats a little early along the walk", walk a little farther,"2 more",
"oh theres one on the other side of the trail",walk a few more stepp and bend down to pick up a little one and .................. "HOLY SHIT 5 griants hiding in the back!!!!"

Then I walked futher along and came to the dyke  :smirk:, suprise supirse , more mushrooms!!!(the dyke is huge, but the mushrooms seem to appear in greater abundence on the little trail)

I wish I would have gotten habitat pics, this spot is magical.

And on my way out, I found about 5 more mushrooms that I had walked right passed, and its not like I didnt look hard when I passed them the first time, the last mushroom I took I almost missed because it was behind a log, and I just saw the tip of its cap and said out loud....."you can hide from me", I ended up saying that alot during this hunt.

I left the pacth with a bag so heavy it broke once on the way home.
(good thing I was taking the bus, which was also funny because I came out of the bush dirty muddy and holding a fat sack of mushrooms and then I hopped on the bus , I had some strange looks, but fuck em, I felt alive, stay in the city , dont go out to the forest people, see if I care

What bothered me was seeing how the slugs ruined so many babies, some of which I took, because hey , they were done for
(its me or the slugs at that point)

I left all the rotten shrooms ,and even a couple of slug eaten babies, and I also left some perfect(no slug damage) young ones so that they could mature.
And to think I only went out there for a job interview.

While I was out there .........

An old guy(68?) stopped me and said.....Old Guy: "anything edible in that bag???, any good eats"?????
:smirk:

ME:"well a siberian shaman would think so"

OG:"really"?? (he looked interested , so I went on)

ME:"well you see sir these are psychoactive mushrooms"

His old face lit right up, at that word psychoactive ,:D  and he smiled and said..............
"I used to pick them all the time , but I never had the guts to eat them"

I replied.......
ME:Well I plan to trade mine for cacti :smirk: and as far as edibles go, I myself have only picked fairy rings this year, what I really want to find is a log full of oysters"

And wouldnt you know it, he was JUST AT A PLACE PACKED WITH OYSTERS, not only that, but this place is in My TOWN, not the town I was in while speaking with him.

So tomorrow I am going to hit that spot and get some eats

"have a good day" he said.

"you to man, and hey....Its hard not to have a great day out here in  the forest"

He smiled bright, nodded his head, I nodded back, and we parted ways.

Sounds like you had alot of fun
I too found Amanita Muscaria earlier this week - only grabbed 2 so I have to go back to my spot later.
The old man seems like he was a really cool guy.
But here's a question for you - did you have the guts to eat them?

No, and if I do eat some I will they will go through alot of preperation.

I plan to trade this haul for some more Cacti

Last year I talked about how many I had, and then  had them rot on me, WELL...not this year.

Its only mid september and I a loaded, I assume that by mid november I will have a few pounds. (dry)   (maybe more then a "few" )

I hear the best method is to dry the caps upside down and drink the juices that form in this "cup". I foolishly tried to make a tea at first and lost my dinner then passed out. I can't wait to try this method though. Even if I vomit again it will be worth it if I can experience this misunderstood mushroom.

Heh well if you ever find some psilocybes I'd be happy to trade
I've read that you're supposed to find them under pine trees but in my patch there's not a single one to be found.

what sorta trees are they growing under?  this is at the top of my list for finding...i would have thought a huge ass red mushroom would be easier...

was it dense forest, lighting, wet/moist?  any pointer towards their habitat would be bitching.

havnt found any psilos either, but if i do ill trade.  i prefer to catch what i eat or grow what i eat.  but if i dont find any...

hoping to find some cyans so i can transplant them to my property and get soem good psilo action going  :crazy2:

These mushrooms (fly agaric?) popped up between yesterday morning and afternoon, across the road from my house!

They were both near silver birch trees, by the side of a churned up track used by horses and people. Sorry the photos don't show more of the habitat. Edit: the track goes through scrubby, medium density woods, light would definitely fall on them during the middle of the day.

I'm not brave enough to try them, haven't even decided if I'll take liberty caps if I find them (gave up tripping years ago due to too many bad trips).

Looks like a rabbit or something has been nibbling at them. Out of curiosity, does anyone know if rodents are affected by them?

Had to kneel in mud to take the pictures, hope you like them!

(click them for larger pictures).

Nice find, great looking Amanitas! I'm yet to find any...

Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes.

On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

A. muscaria tend to favor pine trees. LK told me he normaly finds them growing near the younger pine trees.

We get pure orange veil spot free amanitas here in S.England too, infact they are much the norm at my current picking location right now, and certainly represented around 40-50% of the crop last year. I notice that some of your crop exhibit a morphology that I am unfamiliar with here, they seem more "domed", almost phalloides like (which is the only amanita I've seen here with a morphology anything like them).
