Microwave pasteurization of Straw????
    #3148067 - 09/17/04 01:42 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have just finished searching for some ways of Microwave pasteurization for Straw. I couldn't find anything about straw, but I found 2 threads of Microwave pasteurizing poo.

Here

and

There

If anyone has any info on doing this with straw, I would really appreciate this.

Thanks.

I usually dont like to bump threads (this is actually my first time), but I'm sure theres someone out there in web land that can help me with this.

If poo can be nuked, why can't straw? And if it can, how do I do it.

Please....

i know i'm not answering your question, but i honestly have no idea about microwave sterilization...

BUT -

if you wanted to do a heat pasturization that would more evenly heat something, you could just wrap the stuff in tinfoil and throw it on the barbecue. i've seen that in this forum before, i'm pretty sure it would work. it will most likely dehydrate whatever you put in there, but i'm sure the carbon deposits from the burning charcoal would be good for your mushies.

EDIT -
well, if poo can be microwaved, why don't you just do it the same way they sterilize poo? for a microwave to heat something, it has to have water in it... so you might want to lightly mist the hay with water before you put it in there. just put whatever you want sterile in the microwave in a microwave safe container and nuke it for however long they nuke the poo.

but don't take my advice as being great, wait until someone else chimes in to say yay or nay.

Yea, I figured that.

I was actually planning on completely emersing it in water. I figure that way it has a better chance of holding a more consistant temp.

you cant pasteurize in a micro wave, as you can not hold the temp steady for long enougth, it always gets too high.

You can sterilise it though.

Why not just do the tek mycofile used in the bulk neglect grow? Fill a container with hot water with the substarate in a cloth bag with a brick on top. Pour in boiling water till its 180F and allow to sit then drain overnight.

Its much more effecient enegry wise and eiasier to prep more substrate using this meathod. If you dont have a good range then get one of these and use your grills tank. These can boil allot of water, up to 30 gal, so use a big pot. http://www.bayouclassicdepot.com/product_310_detailed.htm

Loki, Yea, and if its sterilized, theres a higher chance of contams. So thats no good.

Grower, that burner looks nice, but i really cant justify spending any more money on mushrooms than I already have. Especially since I have a lot of expenses coming up.

I reread the FAQs last night, and I think I might try the Lime Water or Bleach Water Tek . Those seem like the cheapest and simplest options ATM. It will also be pretty interesting to see how it turns out, since I haven't seen any growlogs that use these methods.

I would sterilise the straw in the microwave if you have no other way.
though its a bit more subseptable to contams than pasturised, its certainly better than lime water or bleach imho.

Maybe find a local mushroom farm and buy some pasturised substrait from them, its pretty cheap.

Or borrow a friends oven for an hour.

good luck, youll find a way that works for you.

even a hotwater tank can get to the right temps for pasturising, you can do it in a bath, if you have a thermometer and time to top up the heat.

I would try a tried and true method then one that is less common. The lime will kill all the beneficial micro organisms so its almost sterile and prone to contams. Feel free to experiment and see how well it works but keep everything anally clean. If you cant afford that sweet burner you can always spulge for this one, http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=91613

Those tanks are like $2 and it should boil a good 1-2 gal.

as the shroomery giude says,

To be honest, there is no quick and dirty way to start producing massive flushes from the start.
But, following closely to published teks and the sage advice of many posters here at the Shroomery, you will be well on your way to cultivation.
