What are the consequences of the substrate being too wet?
    #3146886 - 09/17/04 01:59 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I just got done PCing a batch of jars, and I noticed that the substrate looks awefully wet. There is no standing water or anything like that, but it is noticably .. wet and clumpy or something, it doesen't seem very airy, but I didn't pack it down at all.

I could get some pics if that would help.

So anyway, if I go ahead with it and it is indeed too wet, what are the consequences? Complete failure, slow colonization, less fruit.. anything bad like that? :P

My experience with very wet substrate is that mycellium growth will be MUCH slower because there's less airspace for it to grow into. The jars may stall altogether. You've definatley got an increased risk of contams with wet, clumpy jars.
I would really recommend starting over. Hope you haven't wasted too many jars!

Luckily, it was only 4 jars, but I had 12 made up. I have a small 7 quart all-american pressure cooker, can only fit 4 at a time.

I took the substrate out of the remaining 8 jars and added a little bit more BRF and vermiculite, until each piece of vermiculite was nicely coated, instead of it all clumping together.

Since they're already sterilized, I'm going to go ahead and use them. It will be an experiment.

PCing the second 4 jars now, they should look better.

Wish me luck. My first try was a failure(no germination), but I had an old syringe. Trying with fresh Ecuadorian and Cambodian syringes; 6 jars each. w00t

dude sorry to tell ya but yor deffinetly going to have to re-sterilize them. cause when you opened those jars up and added more brf
you at the same time introuduced a myraid of contaminate sopres. just play it safe and re-sterilize better to be safe than waste spores.

Ah, you misunderstood. The 4 wet jars that were already sterilized haven't been opened. I'm going to go ahead and use them and see what happens.

The other 8 jars(which hadn't been PC'd yet) are the ones that I re-adjusted the substrate with. They'll be PC'd in the comming hours.

6 each jars will innoculated with PC Ecuador and PC Cambodia, respectivly, when they're nice and cool in the morning.

Has anybody ever used Superthrive with their substrate water? That's going to be my first experiment, assuming these 12 cakes work well.. lol.. although, I'm curious if there would even be any goodness left in it after the high-temp PC.
