the praying mantis
    #3145876 - 09/16/04 09:46 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

We first moved into our new home at the beginning of the summer.
While helping my mom in the extensive garden that came with the stylish 1800's house, i noticed a cute little praying mantis, no bigger than a inch or two.

"look mom, its so cute!" i says. Over the next weeks we see it in various places throughout the garden, once even with another lover, perhaps, but they were just in the same bushy together.

It was unseen again for a solid month, and now its back, and it is absolutely humoungous. i'm guessing half a foot! It also has brown on its back, it is definitely full grown.

My mom was out gardening last week and i came to talk to her, when i notice this gigantic guy on one of our plants eating a full bumble bee! Its ripping off parts of it with one claw, stuffing them hungrily into his face.

I quickly searched for the digi cam to no avail. Since then it is found daily  either meandering in a particular plant, or on our screen, or table, i really have grown a fondness for it. I am glad it has stayed and dwelled in our garden throughout the summer!

Thats my lame little story for the day.

 :sun:

Mantis' are the ultimate eating machines. Not only do you have a new "pet", he'll keep the garden pest free.

Yep, the female has her sex and devours the male praying mantis.

Praying Mantids are the T-Rex's of the insect world. They are fearless- the larger ones have been known to attack birds who make the mistake of getting too close!

That's a great pic! When I was about 10 or so, I saw a huge praying mantis eating a smallish garter snake. It was so amazing! I got mad respect for those things.  :yesnod:

Not all female praying mantis(es?) eat their mates.

there's a dead mantis outside somewhere here at work. it looks like he couldn't find water or something because he's dry like a stick. small for a stick but big for a mantis.

The Mantis is definitely one of my favorite insects. I love how they can turn thier heads and look around.

We found one just a few days ago on our porch. She was close to 3 inches long...beautiful green.

My four year old son spent the day with that mantis crawling all over him. He loved it! At the end of the day we said 'goodbye' and put him back where we found him.

We haven't seen her since, but I'm hoping she'll come back for another visit.
