Some HUGE mushrooms finds!!!
    #3146262 - 09/17/04 01:07 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

not numbers but actuall size.  this is the second biggest mushroom i have ever found.  and the biggest one i have proof of

the big one was over 1 foot across, and about 11" high.  only had a 12" measure, and it was i think around 3" over that but i cant judge size very well.
Russula brevipes

and a polypore of some sort.  they are always big but this one was growing directly up, which is strange for around here...

Hey, they are really huge!
The polypore looks like a ganoderma (=reishi) species known for it's medicinal properties.
If it is one you are really a lucky guy - have never seen one here around ...

reishi (ganoderma lucidum) have white to yellow white pores and a brown sporeprint. the stalk is typically very dark and gnarly. they also have a very cork-like texture.

i would brave that it is likely a ganoderma genus tho.

Here is a good description of the species:

A lot of people here seem to drink a tea made of this mushrooms for their health.

thansk for the link!

im putting my money on Ganoderma tsugae. i find these on conifers fairly often, adn they can get bloudy HUGE! never seen any with stems, unless they are inside the decaying tree...also never seen those red things when they are young, but may have mistaken them for somthign else.

could also be Fomitopsis pinicola perhaps?

For me it looks more like a ganoderma species since the surface is so shiny,
but I am not really an expert ...
For sure the people in the mushroom hunting forum could tell you exactly what this is.

On what kind of wood they are usually growing ?

well to be honest i havnt really thought much of the diff species till now. i found misc bracket fungi on everything. the one in the pic i belive was a douglas fir. but i see some on maples, alders, firs, evern cedars.

that does look different from most i find, but t was raining as well. but it was a lot more waxy and smooth than most. can they get that big in one year?

I would have to say that is not ganoderma lucidium. All reishi I have seen has atleast some red or orange to them. I saw one of those ones yesterday while hiking that was twice that big and you could practically live underneath it. It looked like it had been growing for ages.
