My dad's getting me a laptop for music, which one?
    #3145216 - 09/16/04 09:20 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I'm turning 21 ( :headbang: ) in a week, and my dad has very graciously agreed to get me a laptop for music making as my present.  I play the drums, piano, and guitar, and now I want to put all this shit together and have a nice recording studio to make good songs.  I already bought a voice recording mic and an instrument mic.  I can't spend too much either, probably around 2 grand, and I'll throw in my own money for the software.  So for all you with recording experience, whats the best thing for me, both computer and software?

I'd also like to make some electronic music, I have a keyboard with a midi hookup already, so keep that in mind too.  Whats a laptop that'll be good for recording live music as well as making my own sythn stuff?

thanks yall, rock on

for pro music production and graphic design,
nothing beats a Powermac.

if you must have powered portability,
i highly recommend a G4 Powerbook.
Macs are SO much better than PCs.
you can clone your Operating Systems,
and they don?t crash, Macs Bounce!

but you would have more than twice the power with this:

1.8 GHz @ 64 bits!

when the new 64bit Warez come out, you?ll be glad you got the G5.
the G5 laptop will be coming out in a few months...

www.apple.com/imac

and the best audio interface for the $ = Mark Of The Unicorn?s 828 mkII

($750) www.motu.com

MOTU?s Digital Performer 4 is as solid and powerful as ProTools for a fraction of the cost.

Yeah apple is the way to go for recordings. Simple to use straight out of the box. No pissing about tweaking and fiddling with settings and combinations like you would with a windows system.
Again if its essential that it be a laptop then the G4 Powerbook is probably a bit more solid than the G4 iBook, but if you can live with a system that you do not need to move around then that G5 iMac will shit all over anything. And look at it, its just a monitor. Probably take up less space than a laptop.
Software there are a couple of choice's really. Logic is one. You can get Logic Express which will probably suit your needs, but is quite a complex program.
The other is Pro-Tools. Depending on how you will be doing the recordings, you could probably get away with an MBox. This has 2 high quality inputs and comes with its own software for recording, which is very simple to use.
You may also want to get Reason for the electronic music. You can then run this into Pro-Tools or even run it into Logic.
But if you do anything, get a Mac!

thanks guys, I think a 17 inch g5 is in my budget, along with the stuff from this link... it'd come out to just a shade over two grand. What do you guys think about these products?

i'm pretty sure thats what i'm gonna do (unless that software wouldn't work well with the mac) ?

Which products in that link? There are quite a few.
Try and avoid the Behringer. Its okay, but you will want to upgrade eventually. Its a false economy buying budget gear when you realise how limited it is down the line.
I have just realised you play drums.
You may need a small mixer if you are going to be using more than 2 mics.
Okay. Try a small Mackie 1202.
Plus the MOTU 828
Logic Express for software. FORGET Cubase on the mac. Its a PC program and you will never get the performance like you will with Logic.
AND SOME MONITORS.
do not neglect your choice of speakers!
Why pay all that money for quality hardware and listen to it through a pair of hifi speakers? you will not be able to hear what your mix is doing. I use yamaha msp5's. They reveal subtle details you will not hear with normal hifi speakers. Try Tannoy Reveals also. Good quality. Also get ACTIVES, they will not need a separate amplifier as they have one bulit in and it is matched to the speaker.
Any more questions just ask!!

Although apple computers are great for media based usage, you should take into consideration that they will need to be repaired by a certified technician. So that will cost some extra dollars. As well, mac's are not as easily upgradable as a pc would be.

Personally I see the variety of music programs to be limited when using a mac, in that pirating the software and the different softwares programs are not as abundant as with a pc.

For a short-term purchase I would recommend a mac, and for a long-term purchase (ie easily upgraded/repaired without a technician) I would recommend a pc. Of course you are talking about laptops here, and pc laptops are not very easy to upgrade and repair when compared to desktops pcs... so if a laptop is your thing then definately go for a mac. The ones previously recommended are great.
