    #3143174 - 09/16/04 12:42 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hi, I am a complete ignoramus re. funghi. I found these mushers in my garden, I just wanted to know if they are edible. I have been hunting on t'internet but don't dare to try them in case they are death cap. They have a 20cm diameter. Can you help me? I am in the UK.

Well, you have to fill this template found here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1

We need:

II. Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.

Along with the pictures (if possible), please include the following:

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom bruises
h. Scent of mushroom

For more detailed guidelines for describing your finds, please view this document.

For an explanation of mycological terms please refer to this document .

Dude, the first one you named is definately edible and the second one is something differant.

I don't know what your basis for your IDs are because there barely is a description!

The cap is flat, and a little depressed in the middle. There is no hairiness, it is darker in the centre.
The cap feels dry and solid and the stem feels almost woody and is hollow.
It smells a little sweet, I don't dare taste it.
They were located in a carport(building with a roof and no walls) there are no trees nearby, they were amongst nettles and brambles. I am in the North of England.
The gills seem average, not too crowded, but I have little experience.

You need to make a spore print. Bmarley is on the right track. If the spore print comes out greenish, then it is the very poisonous Chlorophyllum molybdites. If it comes out white, then it's probably Lepiota rachodes, a choice edible species. If the spore print is white, then the next thing to check is to cut one in half vertically and see if it bruises brown within a few seconds. If not, then you have Lepiota rachodes. If it bruises brown quickly, then you should consider it poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!
