Mushy strain spontaneously evolving?
    #3140546 - 09/15/04 07:16 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Ok, I have two casings in my terrarium.

Casing #1 is on its third flush and is producing mushrooms with red caps. (all three flushes have produced red capped mushys)

Casing #2 is on its first flush and is producing mushrooms with brownish white caps. The mushrooms from this casing also appear to be smaller in size and the stem seems to be considerably denser.

The spores used to inoculate Casing #2 were taken from the first flush of Casing #1. Both casings where prepared exactly the same way on rye grain. with 50/50 coco coir casing.

I know when cultivating from spores strains will sometimes evolve and change into an entirely new species. Is this what happened to my mushys?

Are you referring to:

"Two dikaryotic mycelial networks can also grow together, exchange genetic material and form a new strain." from Stamets, "The Mushroom Cultivator" Chapter 1 p. 8?

I don't think he's talking about new species here. Perhaps you had another book in mind?

i think hes talking about a new strain, not species.

i dont think it could happen but i wouldnt rule it out.

Phew. That's a relief.

Now I suppose we could start a discussion of what constitutes a "strain", but since there's wide disagreement on that I ain't touching it. If I were you I'd just assume it's a variant of the strain you're working with and leave it at that... unless it has red spores - in which case I'd sell it for a million bucks.

First off this will never happen ever, secondly Stamets is talking substrain, anytime Two dikaryotic mycelial networks grow together, exchanging genetic material they form a new substrain as long as clamp connections are present. Multispore germination is the perfect example of this.

You should clone the strain which is wierder from the rest and clone it over and over again till you get yourself a real separate strain. Give it a name like Tyler Stain and popularize it.
