AP does it yet again --
    #3139671 - 09/15/04 04:57 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Gotta love the headline writers at AP.

From: http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/09/15/us.saudi.religious.rights.ap/index.html

Headline reads: U.S. criticizes Saudi religious freedoms

But what do we find when we actually read the article?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department said Wednesday that Saudi Arabia has engaged in "particularly severe violations" of religious freedom and for the first time included the kingdom, a key U.S. ally, on a list of countries that could be subject to sanctions.

A department report assessing the state of religious freedom worldwide said that in Saudi Arabia, freedom of religion does not exist and is not recognized or protected under the country's laws.

The report also said that those who do not adhere to the officially sanctioned strain of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia can face "severe repercussions" at the hands of the religious police.

Wednesday's announcement was a departure from the Bush administration's practice of avoiding direct criticism of Saudi Arabia -- a key ally in the war on terrorism, a strong backer of U.S. policies in Iraq and a major oil supplier.

More at the link.

So in fact, the US didn't slam Saudi Arabia for their religious freedoms, but for their lack thereof.

No Liberal media bias. Uh. huh.

Please explain how the state department saying "Saudi Arabia has engaged in "particularly severe violations" of religious freedom"

Is not a criticism of the level of religous freedom in Saudi Arabia???

This thread is beyond weak.

The headline is what's weak, it's a totally twisted and false summary of the article...

pinky, please refer to the thread I made today. Everyone on this board, including myself, dislikes much of the media. But are we just gonna keep bitching about it? What are things that can be done to improve things?

No its not! The US ARE criticising religous freedoms in Saudi. If you are considering imposing sanctions on a country because you dont like the religous freedoms they permit you are criticising their religous freedom.

U.S. criticizes Saudi religious freedoms. = Poor headline

U.S. criticizes lack of Saudi religious freedoms = good headline

Holy shit, you read WAAAAYYY too much into things.

Clearly they were trying to make the headline short and made the point of the article unclear.  however since the VERY FIRST SENTENCE makes clear what happened, to say there is some sort of liberal conspiracy is laughable.  If there were, the article would not put that in the very first sentence, or better yet, they wouldnt run the article. i think it is you who wears the tin foil hat that you accuse others of wearing.
