Mystery Mushroom in Boston Area
    #3139871 - 09/15/04 07:39 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Today's mystery. I have no idea what this is. My first thought was a very young honey mushroom; but i don't think so. The cap is dry and it doesn't look like they plan to get much larger (but how would I know). Any an ideas?

Thanks for any help.

At first glance it looks like Honey Mushrooms to me. If they are, then the center of each cap will have some tiny, dark hairs that stand straight up. Most likely it dried out at just the wrong point as it was coming up.

Happy mushrooming!

Without, mutch doubt,,
a species related to gymnopilus
spectabilis... Pins.... I have a spot,
with the same mushroom fruiting in the
same habitat,,,, I have photos I took of it
today,, I'm waiting for them to mature a
bit more..... and a post I made on them last year..

Without some sort of spore print we can't be 100%
sure,,, and they seem to be too young to drop spores...

Sample a small piece,,, chew it up and spit it out..
They should be bitter... It's undeniable... the bitterness...
Then rinse your mouth out... Wow,,, another find... check out my
post last year

Here!!!!!!!1  :ooo:

WOW that is one amazing gift of GOD! wether it is active or not!
-However thats not why i am replying to this message...
The reason is this, i in one of my Books there is a picture of Gym Spec. That looks almost identical I belive the book Is called "simmons guide to north american fungi"
my only (macro)Question is, "does it look like there are any types of scales?? cause it is apparent in both the description and photo.
I do hope this helps, and ROCK ON

They don't taste bitter as I gather a Gym Spec does. They don't have either the wet tops, nor the small hairs on top of a honey mushrooms.

I don't know... could have sworn they
were some sort of Gymnopilus...
Try to get a spore print once again..
And I guess we'll take it from there...
Nofindum....

I returned to the source, where a few caps survived my earliest visit. The fresh ones do taste astringent and bitter; though I'd say astringent first and bitter second. So we put Gym Spec back as the more likely identification.

The one's I have are too young for a spore print, I assume, but if the ones at the source survive I can take one from them.

I just can't see how it can be a honey mushroom since it lacks both the moist/wet top and the hairs.
