Lepist nuda (blewitt) ?
    #3137530 - 09/15/04 02:36 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

have found lilac mushrooms under some firs on a pile of rotting needles/twigs.
The spore print is beige with a hue of pink and the flesh of the stipe is dark lilac.
At the first glance I would say that they are lepista nuda (blewitt) but since I have
no experience with these I would be grateful if someone of the pros here could give me his/her opinion:

What do you think ?

They do look like Clitocybe (aka Lepista) Nuda. That or it sort of keeps yelling "Entoloma" family at me, but then it should be larger I think.

They suggest Cortinarius to me at first glance. A spore print will make things easy. The spore print of Lepista will be a pale pinkish tan, of Cortinarius rusty brown, and Entoloma will be a deep reddish brown (although the Entolomas have the greatest variation in spore print color).

Happy mushrooming!

The spore print is pale with a purple tan !
I will post a pic when my upload limit is zero again
( even when the color on the pics differs a bit from the original ).

I believe that's Entoloma bloxami

*
Pileus

Cap 5-13 cm broad, convex, becoming plane, umbonate; dark bluish-grey, subviscid, wrinkled to fibrillose-streaked; flesh thick, white, unchanging, odor farinaceous.
*
Lamellae

Gills adnexed to notched, close, white to pale blue, becoming pinkish as spores mature.
*
Stipe

Stipe 5-11 cm long, 1.5-3 cm thick, equal to tapered at base, streaked bluish-grey above, pallid to whitish below; veil absent.
*
Spores

Spores 7-8.5 x 6-7.5 ?m, oval to nearly round, angular. Spore print salmon-pink.
*
Habitat

Scattered to gregarious in mixed hardwood conifer forests from late fall through mid-winter.
*
Edibility

EdibleEdible. Proceed with caution, since most Entolomas are poisonous and because local experience with this mushroom is still limited.
*
Comments

Entoloma bloxami is a large, robust mushroom with a steel blue-grey subviscid cap, usually bluish gills with pinkish tones, and a bluish-grey streaked stipe. It has an aspect that resembles a Tricholoma or Russula, but is easily distinguished by its salmon-pink spore color.

Thanks Maya,

maybe you are right, only the color of the lamellae looks a bit different to me ...

I have tried to get the color in the pic of the spore print as natural as possible , but it was harder then I thought.
A monitor and a paper are two different sort of things ...

Yeah, I missed the spore print part in the orginal post.

That spore print color is reasonable for a Lepista species. Those have to be the most purple colored blewits I've ever seen. Most of them I find are only slightly purplish.

Another difficulty with trying to reproduce the color on a monitor is that you need to photograph it in white light. If the light used for the photo is tinted even slightly it can strongly distort the apparent color. As you might guess, the best lighting is sunlight, but make sure the sun isn't near the horizon or that will be distorted, too. A scanner will do a pretty good job of reproducing the correct color.

Happy mushrooming!

Glad to hear that cause I want to grown them.
Maybe I will try to get a picture of the spores just to make sure ...

Yeah, I also have seen very different pictures of them on the net:

I knew that the color of the light has a strong influence on the color of the picture of the spore print.
That is why I made a manually white balance on a white paper before taking the pic.
Then also the color of the white paper itself was ok - it gave a balanced grey on the monitor, but the color of the spore print itself still was too much brown and not enough red/yellow.
Think that has got something to do with chip in my digi cam.

> A scanner will do a pretty good job of reproducing the correct color.
That's a good idea - will try that out the next time!

Yeap, that's most probably Clitocybe nuda and not Entoloma as i initially thought. I forgot about the size and also, that umbo is very misleading ...

FYI
OTT Lights aren't that expensive and can be found at most craft stores. They are a great source of color-correct light.

thank you debianlinux for that link.
but I do not think that it is only the light, since I took that picture in natural daylight, but also the chip on my camera or maybe the software that produces that picture.
I wonder if there is a good standardized way to produce original color reproductions?
Maybe one should take a picture of a standard color card together with the picture of the print - that would it make easier to calibrate the picture later ?

Here is a picture of the spores.
I have taken it with my digi cam and I know that it is not perfect - but just for completeness:
