Home recording?
    #3132175 - 09/13/04 10:19 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

What is the extent of music production I can do within my own house using a computer and stuff. Like is there something I can get to run my bass or guitar into my pedals then to my amp, out the amp and then somehow into the computer to record? Or record onto a recorder thing like a 4 track and put it into the computer and fuck around with it? Mic the drums and run that into something too? Like what can I do and what kind of programs on a computer would I need?? Could I produce half decent quality shit out of my house or what?

you can produce great stuff out of your house...

perhaps get the program "reason"... but you have to have a good working knowledge of sound boards to really use it well (or you could just mess with it and get an awesomely unique sound because you dont know what your doing then make a million bucks )

get a four track, you can run that into your PC, edit using reason or some other software...  you can do a good job if you put some time into it.

peace

Reason is not a DAW, (digital audio workstation)
it is not meant for recording or editing audio.

it is a MIDI sequencer / sound module plug-in,
that is meant to be used within a DAW like Cubase, Logic or Pro Tools.
you could import audio into one of Reason's samplers,
which would give you MIDI control of the audio sample.

recording to a fourtrack, and then recording that into a comp would be pointless,
unless you where going for a lo-fi tape-hiss sound...

you need to get an audio interface for your computer,
preferably one with a preamp and records at 24 bits / 96 KHz.

a 4 channel in / 2 out PCI card runs about $150.

but you would get a much cleaner recording,
if you invested in a USB or Firewire interface for 2 to 5 times as much $.
these interfaces usually come w/ decent recording / editing software.

i use a mic that plugs into the computer in the little red slot....i just sing into it or i put it next to my guitar amp and play bass or guitar.....yea its not the best but hey it works. i mix it up usin fruityloops for beats and acid pro as the puzzle board. thats ghetto fabulous way. or you can go buy something but damn thats so complicated like gettin up opening a bunch of doors pressing on pedals opening moor doors walking choosing and then spendin money something i dont have. so ya have fun ethier way.

those digital recorders are a breeze,
but if you spent $300 on a card / warez,
and a few hours studying the DAW manual.
you would have far more editing / effecting / mixing power.

just my to sense. :mushroom2:  :mushroom2:

You could get an audigy platinum, that has most of the plug-ins you will need for home recording. Being cheap and ghetto myself, I'v actually almost completed an album ( http://jux.homeip.net ) using only a mic, a sequencer, and a couple wav-editors.

Let us all rejoice the home studio, the origin of true auditory art.
