look what I found
    #3136564 - 09/14/04 11:22 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I found some psilocybe semilanceata growing in a horse pasture. All the mushrooms I have found lately have been in the mountains, the lower elevation fields dont seem to be producing yet. This time I found libs growing straight out of the dung, not just in the grass (3rd pic)

cool finds and nice pics, but I really doubt those in the horse dung are libs. Ps. subfimetaria or Ps. fimetaria are good possibilities though, they're known to grow in dung and resemble semis...

your probably right about them not being libs....thanks for the observation mang :stoned: I forgot about the dung inhabiting psilocybe subfimetaria  How could I go about getting a definite I.D on these mushrooms? (what makes them different them libs, other than the fact they grow directly on dung)

Yeah, at first glance they do look like semilanceata.

Like previously said, they are a species of Panaeolus.

You can tell if they are semilanceata or a different species by trying to pull the outer layer of "skin" from the wet caps.

Also, semilanceta will have a purplish spore print, panaeolus will have a black print.

hrmmm, I dunno man, are there any pans with striate cap margins like that? I haven't seen any. jimmy has posted pics of psilocybes before so I just figured he would know em when he sees them.

As far as getting a definite ID, PMOTW says this: The overall aspect, fairly persistent annular zone and nonpapillate cap can help narrow the field of candidates to P. subfimetaria.

i was sure thats what they were at the time....only difference I noticed was that these ones grew directly out of the shit piles  I knew that was odd for liberty caps.
