Help with mushroom ID
    #3135460 - 09/14/04 07:10 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I found these mushrooms in a recent hunt near Milwaukee, Wi. They were growing on an oak tree that was tipped over but not decayed and laying on the ground. The mushrooms were in a cluster growing out from under the bark. At first I thought they might be honey mushrooms but the spore print is a rusty brown with yellow highlights.

Gills are pale yellow, attached and slightly descending on the stem. The gill color has turned a pale brown/yellow with age.

The cap is between 1/2" and 1 1/2", yellow with darker brown flat scales that are slightly curled or separated from the cap. The cap is convex, with a very small knob at top and slightly rolled in with only a hint of a veil on the edges.
The stem is between 1/4" and 1/2" wide, also pale yellow/white with scales. The scales on the stem are loose and curled from the stem. There is very small bits of the veil but no ring on the stem. It is solid and firm. Cluster of mushrooms are attached at base of the stem
Spore print is a very well defined rusty brown with yellow hightlights
Does not bruise to any other color, flesh remains a pale yellow.
Scent is almost sweet, mild.

Nice specimens, photos, and description.

Those look close to Pholiota aurivella, which is probably a species complex. Although listed in many references as edible, there are reports of mild poisonings by them so they should not be eaten.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the compliments! My son trained me well!

This mushroom has been driving me crazy for the past few days. The yellow color was a really cool site in the middle of a very dry brown woods.

I did a search for the Pholiota aurivella and came up with the following great picture. After searching google it appears to be a mushroom that is found in the Netherlands and Europe, lots of foreign web sites with info.

Thanks!!
