Sunday Night @ Work
    #3134401 - 09/14/04 03:13 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I know I talk about work alot, but it's something that's on my mind alot. So please bear through another story.

It was around 10pm, and a room service call came down. And the girl who takes the orders radio's me. "Room 514 is having a Hernia, he wants some help right away". I'm thinking Oh shit, I don't know how to handle a hernia. But I don't want the guy laying there in pain. Plus i knew he was old because we have a hotel full of War Vets.

So I rush up to his room, knock on the door, and use my key to go in. Laying in bed was a 70+ veteran, in pain. Holding his lower midsection.

"Hello sir, what can I do to help?", he told me to grab a heating pad that was on the desk, so I grabbed it and plugged it in.
"Okay now what can I do" Well we need to put that under my bum he say's.
And that's when I noticed his pants were down and his old pubic hair was hanging out ....I kind of froze, and was like "uhhh."

So he told me I had to roll him onto his side, place the heating pad under his bare old bum and then roll him back. I did just that.

Then the old man is like "wanna see it?"  and before I could say no, he took his hands off this 'bump' and it was a huge grapefruit sized bump covered in old man pubes.

I kind of wanted to get out of there, but I was concerned so I asked what else I could do. I ended up feeding him 6 pills, holding his head and giving him apple juice..

I moved the phone closer to his bed, checked it to make sure it was still working properly and told him to phone if he needed help with anything else....

It was a weird situation, and one I wasn't entirely combfortable with, but he was old, alone, and in pain, plus he was a nice man.

You're a good guy. Thats really great of you to be there for someone in pain, even if it is uncomfortable for you.

Thanks for the kind words.

The next day he called me up to his room and asked me to sit and talk with him. We talked for about 20 minutes and he basically just wanted to know where I was from, what I was doing in life, how old I was.

He also gave me $20, and is writing a letter to the head of the chain of hotels I work for. I asked him not to give me the $20, but he insisted more than once. He also asked if he could send me a christmas card...I gave him my address and told him to write whenever he wanted...

Oh, while we were talking he told me about some of the time he spent in the war, he was 17 when the A-bomb went off in Hiroshima(sp?) and it turned out he had just left a day prior to it going off. I thought that was pretty interesting

yup, mos defiantly will.

You know how the Canadian Military is always made fun of for always being drunk, or doing beer runs etc...?

Well most of these Vet's have been drunk for 3 days straight. So the stereotype is true.
