Best jazz album ever...
    #3127451 - 09/12/04 09:52 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

In A Silent Way by Miles Davis.

Don't let anybody tell or convince you otherwise. This truly is a masterpiece of the genre. Every single note is prefectly place and the mellow grooves ride easy for the duration of the album. I listen to this album frequently and with every listen I seem to find a new groove or riff which just sticks with me. Stash your copy of "Kind of Blue" and give this album the attention it deserves.

When I saw this title my first thought was "Not unless it's a Miles Davis album."

Thanks for not letting me down.

I would of course have to agree with Gr8fulJ420, in that In A Silent Way is indeed the best jazz album of all time. You should all give it a try next time you're in the mood

Miles Davis eh; have you ever heard of Jon Faddis? Specifically his "Into the Faddisphere" album?

On the Corner and Live Evil are excellent albums. I own both (and much more MD, too) and and they never stray far from the pile of CDs by my stereo.

But there is just something about In A Silent Way which makes it, in my opinion, the masterpiece.

what do you think about bitches brew, though? i've got the 4-cd special edition set... well, I've listened to the whole thing maybe twice all the way through, and little snippets of it every now and again... honestly, it's not really an album like Sketches of Spain or whatever, that you can just pop in and groove to... it's definitely something, i just can't decide if it really is genius, or if it's just strange...

hmm...

I haven't listened to the new 4-cd edition but I own the double-cd version. You're absolutely right that you can't just pop it in and groove on it. It took me a few listenings in various setttings to dig it. Each song has so much going on that it is hard to keep track of the different phrases by all the musicians. It's almost like each is playing his own solo on top of the crazy rhythms. I think cacophony wold be a good word to describe that sound. He was really on the bleeding edge of electrified jazz; like nothing else at the time.

Once I kinda figured the album out a little bit more I started to enjoy it. But it wasn't immediate; and most of my friends don't like it either. Oh well.

Here are other albums which I own and love (and recommend): Agharta, Pangaea, Big Fun, On the Corner, Water Babies, Black Beauty (Live at the Fillmore), It's About That Time (Live at the Fillmore), ESP, Sorceror. I own Kind of Blue, too... but I think that album is highly overrated :-)

Good to see some appreciation for 1969-1970s Miles, which IMO is the best.

Live Evil, Bitches Brew and Tribute to Jack Johnson are all incredible masterpieces.
