Psilocybe cubensis PF-Tek
    #3132919 - 09/14/04 12:54 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

As I mentioned in a previous post, after I tried mushrooms I knew I had to grow them.  I looked up how, started on the PF Tek, and here I am now

I am currently on day 16 of my operation, and my first cakes have been birthed for 2 days.  I initially inoculated six 1/4 pint jars.  A few days later, I did another four 1/4 pint jars.  I had saved some of my 12cc syringe until I went out and bought some 1/2 pint jars, which I did.  I inoculated six of those with only 1/2cc each.  I am now out of spore solution, and really hoping I can grow a few good shrooms worthy of giving spores.

Of my six cakes that had colonized 100% (they were completely covered in about 10 days, and I waited a few more to be completely sure), I birthed two directly into my terranium, cold shocked two for 24 hours, and am leaving two in their jars to pin before I birth them.

I have built a simple dual-chambered terranium and am hand spraying for humidity.  I spray 6-8 times a day, fan it out twice a day, and remove standing water once a day.

The two that I birthed directly have bumps of mycelium all over them, which I hope are knots.  Perhaps you guys can tell me by looking at my pics.  They are the two on the left in the first pic, and the close up is of the one with the biggest bumps (at the back of the cake.)

Thanks aussie for the info.  Pics are now thumbnailed.

I'm using the drip shield because when I first started, I didn't have internet access, just a saved copy of the PF Tek.  The dual chambered terrarium was the only way detailed.  I don't really mind, as it gives me something to do while I impatiently wait for my shrooms to start growing

Next grow will most likely be with perlite.

FYI perilite sucks, its hard to clean up and u will end up waisting alot ( I did) Geo lite with a bubbler is alittle more money(check garage sales/junk stores) but is better and easier to clean up... just PC the rocks and u can re use em.. theyre realy nice in an aquarium.

Thanks for the tip Rah. I'll look into it for my next grow.

I think I recall seeing some in a few pics. . . is it red and cooling looking, or have I lost my mind?

Yeah, sort of reddish, it's basically little clay pebbles. But like expanded similar to how perlite is made, just bigger. Think big pink perlite and you're real close. It is the best it seems, but if you can't find it local then lava rocks work too. Anything porous really, which will wick (but not absorb) water and is sterile with no nutrients of its own. Which sadly seems to be perlite, hydroton/geolite/whatever, and lavarock.

Thanks Spudz. Always right there with good info.

So can anyone tell me those bumps on the two left cakes resemble knots, or am I just getting too anxious? Or are they just freakish blobs of mycelium?

Aussie:

In the pics, it had been 2 days since I birthed the two cakes on the left, and once day since the other two came out of a 24 hour cold shocking.  Today, it's been 4 days since I birthed the first ones. . . there are more and bigger bumps on all the cakes now.  I'll probably take another pic when I get home from work.

Not really an update, because not much has happened except the bumps of myco have gotten a little bigger, and there are more of the little ones too.

Day 5 after birthing.

Oh ya!!!  One of my cakes has pins!  I am so very, very, very excited right now! :mushroom2:

Figures that as I try to take a picture, my camera batteries die.  Oh well, they're rechargable.  Expect pics in a few hours.

This was day 7 after birthing the cakes, day 21 of the overall grow. Only one picture turned out, and the pins are little difficult to make out; they are much more apparent in real life.

I've been misting 6-8 times a day with plain water, up until today. I finally went out and bought some hydrogen peroxide, so now I'm misting with a 1:10 mix. I also fan the terrarium twice per day, and remove standing water once a day. After a few more pins show up, I plan on cutting back on mistings.

Comments/critisism gladly accepted.

Yea don't mist so much. If there is enough standing water that you have to empty it everyday that is too much.
I have no experiance with cakes so I don't know how much help they need, but 6 sounds like alot.

Looks good though, some pins are about to bust out

Update. Day nine since birth, day 23 since knocking them up. All my four cakes that I birthed orignally now have pins. The ones I cold shocked actually took longer to pin; go figure. I birthed two more yesterday, dunked and rolled them.

The pins really are doubling in size every 12 hours. Here are some pics from about an hour ago. Pardon my crappy photography skills. . . I promise some good mycopr0n when I harvest. . . I don't want to take them out of the fruiting chamber until then.

By the way, is it more or less normal to just get pins only at the base of the cake? Does anyone know why that is?

Thanks Vaka. From now on I'm dunking and rolling my cakes in verm, after seeing the huge difference it made for ihatejacknjill's grow. The one cake he dunked and rolled grew three times as many shrooms as his others.

Here we are. . . the veils have torn. They exploded while I was at work today, a very pleasant suprise to come home to. All my cakes are pinning like mad now, especially one of the ones I dunked and rolled. It's only been birthed 5 days, and it's already passed some of the ones that have been birthed for 12!

Mostly a pic update, so here are the pics:

These two were my original two pins, as seen in my previous post. This is just five days after they were first noticable! Anyways, I must chop their heads off soon to make spore prints.

I decapitated the smaller one in that pic, and another smaller one.  They looked almost planar.  I'm gonna wait for a bit before I decap that big(ger) one.

The circle of life continues  :sperm:

What is considered average size for a cap to take a print from?  Mine are only the size of quarters.

anyhoo, nice work buddy! the only caps i've printed were about 1-2.5 inches across. not super monster big, but pretty big IMHO.

I think that the quarter sized ones should work.  I don't speak from experience, but it seems logical that as long as it is fully matured, veil torn, etc, that it should yield a spore print.

I picked some aborts and the stems of the shrooms I decapitated. My drying chamber is made out of a tupperware container. Instead of mesh, I took an identical tupperware container, cut the bottom out, and poked a hojillion holes in it with my soldering iron. I then poured dessicant (Dry-Z-Air, the only kind I could find at Home Depot) into the bottom of my tupperware container. I placed my hole filled bottom over the dessicant, and it rests on the sides of the containter about an inch above the dessicant. I took a spare cpu fan I had laying around and put it in the chamber, and ran the wires out. I hooked the wires up to 12V. The mushrooms rest on the hole-filled bottom part, and hopefully will dry out very rapidly, with dessicant and air flow in a sealed chamber.

Three prints have been made successfully, in a very sterile environment.  I'm in the process of making two more, one is much larger than my previous ones.  The cap is about 1.5" in diameter.

A pic of my shrooms this morning:

Then I picked a handful of them:

And this is what was in my drying chamber from yesterday:

There are still some mushrooms growing in my fruiting chamber off two cakes.  Four cakes are ready for dunking.

I really wish I had a scale.  I have no idea about the wet or dry weight.  My girl and I will be eating some tonight, so it will be a fun guessing game.  :crazy2:

Likely there will be a trip report in the near future.

Trip Report [Re: ShroomCat]
    #3186370 - 09/27/04 01:05 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

I had an intense trip Saturday night. It was well planned, and quite the experience.

While my girlfriend was at work, I cleaned up our place. I cleaned up clutter, washed surfaces, and put a red light bulb into our overhead light. I melted some chocolate down and dipped my dry shrooms in it, and put them in the freezer. I would guess there were about 5 grams of dry shrooms in the chocolate. I was also planning on making some tea with my fresh mushrooms.

I picked my girl up from work, and we came home. We were both starving, having not eaten all day, so we had a light snack, a turkey sandwich. I didn?t want to be hungry through the entire trip. Then we smoked a joint and started watching Princess Mononoke. About half an hour into the movie, we munched down on our chocolate covered mushrooms. They were delicious.

The mushrooms took their time to kick in. After about 45 minutes, we were feeling very mild effects, so I decided now would be a good time to make the tea. By the time the tea was ready, about 30 minutes later, the mushrooms we had eaten were starting to take a more profound effect. The talking/snarling wolves in Princess Mononoke were pretty terrifying, in a good way, and the red glow of our overhead lamp cast a demonic glow throughout our living room. Our Aztec-pattern rug was alive, the patterns following themselves around and around. We drank back our tea over the next 20 minutes, the effects from the mushrooms we ate growing the whole time.

By the time we finished our tea, our living room was alive. We had lost interest in the movie due to our inability to follow the storyline. The red glow from our overhead light spread across the ceiling, making it crawl. I particularly remember my bookshelf expanding and contracting, the shelves growing closer and further apart, while the wood grain ?dripped? ever downwards.

I started to worry a little bit about what was going to happen when the tea kicked in. I had made it with what I would guess to be about 50 grams of fresh shrooms, and let it simmer for a good 20 minutes. With this worry in mind, that?s when I noticed the Cat on the Wall. I have this photograph of a small, immensely cute kitten on my wall. I printed it off on 8 ? x 11 paper, framed it, and put it on my wall. The kitten is looking directly at the camera, and is just so cute. Or at least, he normally is. Now he was staring daggers at me. His yellow eyes were aglow with hatred, and I could feel his demonic wrath. I was struck with fear, but realized where this was going take me. I made myself stare back at the Cat on the Wall. I was afraid, mostly afraid I was going to have a bad trip. But I stared back at this evil kitten until I was no longer afraid of him. I probably stared at him for only a minute or two, but it felt a lot longer. Slowly he reformed from a demon, to a cute cuddly kitten. Then I smiled, as the photograph became three dimensional.

My girlfriend asked what I was doing. I told her that the Cat on the Wall was going 3D, not mentioning I had just been afraid of it. We started the talk about the Cat on the Wall. We wondered what his name was, where he was from, how old he would be now.

After some discussion, and more tripping out on random things in our living room, I got up to go to the washroom. I always enjoy the bathroom during trips. I like looking at myself in the mirror. For some reason, I rarely get visuals on my own face, I just look a little insane, with my eyes the size of saucers. Pissing in the toilet was a challenge, as it seemed miles below me, and was expanding and contracting in size. After I finished, and washed my hands, I noticed something really cool. The cabinet below our mirror has an interesting white/blue/cream texture on it. It, like most everything else, was flowing. What was unique about this texture was that I realized I could control its flow with my mind, to a certain extent. It amused me greatly to melt the texture however I wanted.

My girlfriend had to come see if I was ok, I had spent so long playing with the melting texture on the cabinet. After this, I don?t remember clearly the order of events for several hours. I remember laying face down on the floor, losing myself in CEV. I was flying through tunnels of weird symbols, amongst other strange things. I also remember laying on the couch with my girl, sinking into it. Becoming one with the couch. I remember starting to feel a little off, a little uncomfortable. This feeling stayed with me the rest of the night, and sort of ruined my fun. I realized later it was just a bad stomach ache.

We did go out for a walk outside, but I couldn?t handle it. I was cold, and not having very much fun. So we went back to our place and smoked another joint. This got me really stoned. We sat around for a few more hours, slowly coming down. I was starting to feel even worse at this point.

As I was laying on the couch, not feeling so good, I went into deep philosophical thoughts. I came to the conclusion, that the majority of the working class in modern society was led along with the idea of a good, fulfilling life, when in reality, few working class people were truly happy with where they were at in life. Everywhere we look we see happy people living fulfilling lives, in advertisements, sitcoms, movies. It keeps the masses content, thinking that they should be content.

In feeling not so good, I tried to figure out why. I started to think about what I was thinking about, and how it related to how I was feeling. In essence, I was trying to figure out how I think. This just led to one confusing thought loop. I highly recommend not thinking about how you think.

Eventually we went to bed, about seven hours after eating the first mushrooms. It took a couple hours for us to fall asleep though, we were still a little high, and seeing light visuals. I woke up 4 hours later though, feeling very rested. I still had the stomach ache I went to bed with. . . I don?t think it was related to the mushrooms, I just happened to have a bad stomach ache.

Overall, it was a good trip to start that slowly became uncomfortable. I?d do again anytime.

Later today I?ll post a picture of the Cat on the Wall. It played a very important role in my trip, and I think was the most enjoyable and profound part of it.

My last two trips I've thought of the same sort of thing. It's led me to analyze my life and to then get depressed because I can't think of a way to really do something with your life. I mean what does everyone else do? Work all day, watch tv at night, sleep only to go to work again and be miserable at your job, because, even if you liked what you do when you first started, given enough time you'll start to hate almost any job. So what do you do with your life? Well it's a depressing thought when watching adult swim anime at 4:30 in the morning and you can't sleep.

Do you find it uncomfortable or awkward to view/be around that picture of the cat after having a difficult time with it?

Well, I picked the remaining shrooms off of the first flush of my original six cakes.  I figure this is a good point to close this log.  Thanks for everyone's help, support and good words.

I also bought a Jennings JS-120 scale :birthday: :dancing: :handth:

I can't tell you my total harvest from six 1/4 pint cakes, as most shrooms have already been consumed.  But I can tell you that we have 4.4 grams of dried shrooms left
