Hey! can you help me double check the ID of this cactus?
    #3132796 - 09/14/04 02:17 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys.

A while back my flatmate gave me a cactus for a birthday present. He said it was one you could eat and trip off but hes long gone and well...I want to eat it. The thing is I am not too sure what it is..I have looked it up from the name given on the label but it seems the name on the label is very broad. So here are some photos.

Its about 60-70cm high I don't know what else i relaly need to describe so here are some pictures of it.

I hope these will do but I can gather more info if needed. What I want to know is the type of cactus it is and what would be the best method to turn into into a substance that can be taken. Thankyou so much!

Hey bro,
Yes that cacti is looking like a goodie! Its hard to give a 100% ID from a pic but that looks like Trichocereus peruvianus to me (Peruvian torch), and I'm pretty damn sure that its at least a Trichocereus of some description meaning it should contain mescaline etc. Some people say that Peruvian torch is more potent than San Pedro but personally I beleive them to be about the same potency.

Check out this tek here for a good method to make it into a juice. Theres other methods out there but this one seems to be pretty good.

Hey bolie, I'm in Dunedin, will be attending the Equniox party here on Saturday night, otherwise I would be coming to Chch for it. I had noticed that this post was 'coincidentally' in time for Equinox...heh...I had one of the best trips of my life on cactus at the Chch autumn equinox, full on shamanic voyaging, time travel, OBE's, etc. that was on 2 feet of some thick cactus though.

As for this one I reckon it would do 1 potent dose or 2 medium doses...here's my reccomendation on cutting it.

The base is cut at an angle as to prevent water from pooling in the exposed stump which could cause rot. If you keep the stump healthy (ie water, sun, and some fertilizer) it has the capacity to produce MANY new branches which will grow quickly due to the established root structure. When they get to be 15cm or so you can cut them off and plant them and then the stump will keep popping new ones out. Also as shown in the pic its a good idea to keep the top section. When cut, leave it on a windowsill or similar spot where it can callous. When the exposed surface of the stem dries up and gets a 'tough' feeling to touch, then you can get some soil and plant it about 5cm deep. Usually it takes about a week to be ready to plant. It will spring roots and grow into another healthy cactus. So in other words by chopping this one cactus you will eventually end up with many cacti. Cool huh!

So anyway as I said it'd be a good idea to use the link posted above to brew it then split it either 1 or 2 ways. Anything less than that and you're not likely to feel much at all.

PS you might want to post your pics as .jpg from now on, cause daaaamn those ones too forever to load for me!!

I would never cut such a ridiculously beautiful cactus......

Such a large specimine would throw out pups on its own if it were in a biggger pot...or in the ground...

Edit: Eat some mushrooms instead man:(:(:( that thing is absolutely beautiful

i agree with harvey, the 'chop-chop' hurts my heart but, it's his cactus anyways...
perhaps he wants to check it out if it's 'worth growing' it... =D

It would be a shame to chop it, i would let it groa another foot so you and one or two others can have a real nice experience together. If your going to chop it leave a good 8" of a stump left. Dont put the cut top in a window, just put it in a dark dry spot for about 3 weeks and make sure to use a clean knife. When you root the top dont water for 4 weeks and keep it in the shade then move it into partial shade and water then into full sun after the 5th week.

Well, I think chopping it is a good idea. In the short term it will make the cactus less attractive, but in two years he could have five cacti that are just as nice as that. You have to plan ahead!

It's rare to get more then 2 pups unless its a massive rootstock and you leave a decent about of stump. I chopped mine and only got one pup and i cut 2 weeks after transplanting but only left 3" of stump.

I have a 3" stump with three good pups growing on it...

But I forgot that he was going to eat most of it. I still think cutting is a good idea though, stumps in my experience normally give two or three pups when cut horizontally, and the tip will grow fast. And he could get another cutting or two from the middle and still have a good time!

Yeah, you've totally got to plan ahead. I think it is worth chopping it. Its not true that only 2 pups can grow out of a stump, infact here in NZ (I think they like to grow here) I've only seen that happen a couple of times usually its at least 3 and up to 6. But thats only 3-6 at a time...so when you remove those ones for planting when they're big enough, then it will sprout more, and if you repot it into a larger pot, then the pups will grow very vigorously. Like Openminded said, in 2 years you could have yourself 5 nice cacti instead of 1.

So long as you have respect for your cactus I don't see any problem in cutting it. They are a very sustainable plant. Even if you decide not to eat it now, it would probably be worth cutting it into sections and planting those anyway, this way you will end up with MANY cacti in 2-3 years.

Oh by the way if you do cook it up I highly reccomend fasting for at least 5 hours before ingestion.

Oh and to the dude who said 'eat some mushrooms instead man', do you not realise that these two sacraments aren't really a substitute for each other? The effects are completely different. Personally I think I'd go for cactus over shrooms if I had to choose. Its such a clear trip, it gently pulls you into the realms of higher thought and I find it is a lot easier to sustain a continued thought / trance state on cactus than shrooms. I also find that it takes your body as well your mind into another reality. This dude is into lucid dreaming, I think he's gonna dig cactus.

Thanks for all your responses! I have thought long and hard about this. This cactus watches me everday and everynight when I sleep so it was a tough decision. I don't think she (she is called christine mckenzie) wanted me to eat her at the start, but when I explained that by doing this I will drastically speed up the reproduction process of here genes she was more than happy for me to eat her.

I have another one nearly twice this size at my parents house which I am going to pick up. This will provide my small group of close friends a magical journey this weekend

Thankyou so much! I will let you know how it goes and take pictures even.
